2004R Calibration
Has anyone been successful in raising the part throttle shift points on their 2004R transplant. I realize it was calibrated for a high rear gear and I have a low gear, 4.10 to be exact. It thinks I'm traveling much faster than I am due to the increased driveshaft speed. The think will go into 4th by 35-40 and doesn't really respond to 50-60% throttle as I would expect. Yes the TV cable is properly adjusted and my understanding is this is not how you set the shift points.

Re: 2004R Calibration
I have read where people trim the weights in the governor to change the shift point.
https://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/s...php?tid/283173 https://www.hotrodders.com/threads/c...ission.221004/ Here is a good thread on this forum - http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...4&postcount=19 Now to find out where to get those governors. Maybe Monster can help? - https://www.monstertransmission.com/...or_c_5183.html Do not attempt to adjust the shift timing with the throttle valve cable. The shift timing is controlled by the governor springs. For higher shift points at wide-open throttle, install lighter springs. For lower shift points at wide-open throttle, install stronger springs. - https://transmissioncenter.net/shop/200-r4-tip-sheet/

Re: 2004R Calibration
I like the lighter springs idea in the last link.

Re: 2004R Calibration
If Transgo makes a shift reprogramer kit for that trans it should come with governor springs and some recommendations for a starting point.

They say their kit fixes late or early shifts.

Re: 2004R Calibration
Springs alone won't make drastic changes. Finding a "HP" Turbo Buick or Monte Carlo SS Valve Body & Governor will be the BEST starting point.
I stopped building 700R4 & 2004R because it was always assumed that tuning shift points is included in a rebuild. I got scars up & down my arms pulling Governors. People ask if I got a skin condition.....I have a "Got Burnt 100,000 times" condition!! Take the Governor Springs completely out & see what it does....If it still shifts early....Lighter springs will obviously not fix it. |

Re: 2004R Calibration
Got a response back from Transgo. Their shift improver kits will not reprogram the shift points from what they were from the factory for a particular transmission calibration.

Re: 2004R Calibration
B&M 20248 doesn't work on 200-4R governors.

Re: 2004R Calibration
I sent my valve body and governor to Extreme Automatics. They set it all up and sent it back. I love how it works now, around $325 all said and done. This was on a low mile stock olds 88 2004r, now in my 68 with 4.11 gears and 275/60 rear tires. Definitely worth the money, no trial and error. I have buddy who did the governor weights and springs in his Monster 2004r that had the same low shift points and he had the pan off 5 or 6 until he liked it. Extreme was well worth it.

Re: 2004R Calibration
Make sure to get the correct speedo gears in there at the same time, don’t want to go in there again. My buddy also set up a delay relay in the lockup that slows 4th gear lockup that we both use, that is really nice too.

Re: 2004R Calibration
I also have my lockup set up that way. Using a vac switch and electronic delay works well.
