Well, the PO messed up the riders side window regulator and even drilled a hole in it.

So I need to rebuild it. I have a spare drivers side, but no riders side. I can get it apart to replace the shaft, even got the spring off, safely I might add.

The Question:

Does anyone have a trick to get the spring back on?

I put new springs in mine, as I recall it was easy if you crank the regulator all the way to the down side (I think - or maybe it was the up side...oh well, you'll figure it out). That way there's virtually no tension on it. But jeez, as chewed up at that spline is, I'd consider replacing the regulator.

Sorry if I'm posting too much today guys - it's pouring rain outside and I have nothing else to do!

Those splines aren't worth trying to rebuild.

Dan, I was going to replace the worn shaft with the shaft in the second picture if I can get the spring back on.

I have a pair of NORS rebuild kits that I bought off eBay years ago for mine. They have that shaft in them.

Ok, got it changed out and it works fine. Looks funny until I can get the right rivets. Can't put the spring back with those long bolts.

Now where to find rivets that finish out at 1/4" long and are 0.1455 in diameter...

Instead of rivets I've seen guys just use short machine screws with thin nyloc nuts.

I did one with rivets, new inner shaft bent!

Are you replacing the rollers too? I redid one regulator and bought a new one, but I can't get them to roll up quite right so keep us posted.

Not replacing the rollers, just the one shaft. It seems to work fine.

What rivets did you use and where did you get them?

They came with the replacement piece. Had to carefully hold it all in a vise and use a punch to beat the rivets.

I don't see the big deal, just put bolts. The only reason they used the rivets was for speed and they had no plan on them being rebuilt (they do commonly last 70 years! LOL) but bolts will work just fine.

Thanks Brian, I'll stick to the bolts.

I did the factory style rivets on a vent window and they are a real pain without the factory setup.

The Filling station has (shows) the pieces to replace that shaft. Plus they have the correct rivets but they are driven rivets. They also have the rollers.

Got some #8 machine screws with washers and lock washers to finish my repair.

My ongoing truck projects: 48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six. 71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant. 77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.
