Jason -Sorry to hear about all this and whatever way you go you'll do the right thing.

IMO I'd keep the survivor. Then I'd look at the cost associated with a less expensive place to store the project and inventory the parts needed that you have on hand to get it done. If affordable storage can be found and you have the essentials to get the project done at some point down the road then mothball the project and its parts and sell the remainder of all the extra parts/trucks you have to defer the storage expenses. If you can't find storage that meets your needs or the list of parts needed to complete the project is too long then sell the project, you'd still be ahead with a top-of-the-line 72 BB survivor.

For those who haven't seen Jason and his Dad's shop it's no easy feat to move this stuff to another location. These guys have A LOT of parts and my pics below don't do justice to the quantity. Hang in there and don't let yourself feel overwhelmed.

I'd say consider getting a shop partner. I imagine the desire will return in time. If not, let your partner buy you out.

Yes I have a 3 car garage but it is filled up with 3 cars.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions everyone. I am on my way to look at a shop that is the same size if not the same shop that I started out in 2006.

Like the one I had before I up-sized in 2007 then up-sized again @ 2008.

Maybe I can flip the rent on 2 shops for a couple months and in the meantime have a huge garage sale or a FREE PARTS GIVEAWAY.

Speaking of parts, I have some that belong to members here. Off the top I can think of a 402 engine, a 72 door, and probably a few others. My dad will remember who's they are. If I have someones parts, soon would be a good time to pick them up.

Well I measured my shop and its 40x60=2400 instead of the 1500 sq ft I mentioned earlier plus a bullpen full of stuff . The shop I just looked at is 25x30=750. 2400 ft down to 750, that will be quite the squeeze job.

Your original questions didn't give us nearly the picture as to what's going on. There's a huge difference between an enthusiast with one truck, one project, and a seemingly expensive and unnecessary shop... And someone with a business that has done 30 of these trucks and has a pen with a half dozen of them.

I really don't know what to suggest at this point. Maybe see if you can find a buyer for the business as a whole

I knew you and your dad had this place. I didn't know Paul had a stroke and am sorry to hear of it. Tell him hello for me. I hope he's doing well. I was only thinking of your driver,project,and parts for those in my reply. I would sell off all excess parts,remaining trucks,and move on. I don't know what all you still have there. But,if it's still trucks and big parts,I'd sell off the trucks and big parts first and get an economical storage space for the rest.
In my situation,I had to create a place for parts in my buildings,projects sat outside at my house,and I started selling. I was able to get out in the 60 days given,but I'm just now getting to where I mostly just have parts for the two trucks I kept. I've decided to sell a lot more parts and more trucks than I originally intended. I'm good with less and won't get more till I have a permanent place to keep it all.

$9k a year just for storage is beyond crazy. I used to get pissed when my rented garages used to cost me $1200/year (less than 5 years ago)

If you think about it, after about 3 year's storage costs, you could have your own garage built and paid for. Then your storage would be free FOREVER.

After 2 year's storage costs, you could have bought an almost mint truck already done

After 1 year's storage costs you could have paid a shop to finish everything for you

With your situation, it definitely sounds like the third option would be your best. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

I've been looking for workshop/storage space myself but, I live in New Jersey and being such a densely populated state, any kind of real estate, including rentals, is pricey. It can be frustrating.

I'd say downsize, but maybe look for a place where you could rent to buy. That way at least you're working towards owning the property outright. That might be the best plan if you plan on keeping the business going.

As a side note, does anyone know if those seats in the survivor are original equipment? I really like them, but I've never seen that style before.

I'm meeting with some board members in NM on the 14th. I suspect some of us would be interested in a jaunt over to Lubbock to buy some parts should you decide to sell a few. Just say the word.

BTW I lived in Lubbock for 3+ years and graduated from TT. Go Red Raiders.

They are original equipment but the covers are new reproductions.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I have not decided what to do but I am pretty sure I will keep the survivor. I think it would wise to find a small shop to move the project and all the expensive sellable parts to. Then I could have a huge sale and get out of the big shop. This would give me some time to think about what to do with the project truck.
