When you look at the black numbers, Do they look like paint or grease pencil, or other. It's the 262 on the right that stands out. That should be Z62. Trim levels are often on the firewall. Is your truck saddle with a white top? (555). No idea on the F355, Very cool to see though.

Yup saddle with white top. There was undercoating from a po on part of the firewall that I had removed when I got it so the numbers needed touching up. They must have been written in grease pencil.

Truck was built on Oshawa

No "T"s. Just a 2 on both sides next to the hinges.

Okay, I know some people have grease marks, but what about these bad guys? We really have no idea what these mean.

That location and size is a bit unusual (as you probably already know).

My first guess would be a build sequence number (that's always my "go to" response) - lol.

Beyond that - it could be anything. I've seen scribbles dividing up lunch contributions, calculations for a bookie and love notes to the ladies in the Trim area, so there's really no telling.

My 72 had all the usual grease pencil marks. I documented them well before the tear down. Also had the last three numbers of the build sequence etched into the firewall. It's a Fremont truck.

This is neat. Under the factory red paint on the driver's and passenger's side firewall...the word "RED" on the bare metal. That GM red will apparently stick to anything forever. It kind of lessened to blow of grinding off the original model, engine and transmission grease marks when there were more grease markings below them.

Funny, my firewall has numbers 441 also painted on with what seems like a brush. Right behind the engine. You're the only other I've seen similar. Also assembled in Janesville (maybe the same employees painted)

IIRC, the only other place 441 existed was on the top right face on the gas tank.
You can just barely make them out here, in white.

I see a model number (10934) , and engine (LS9) and trans RPO (M38).

Passenger side is the model number CE10934
C = 2wd
E = V8
1 = 1/2 Ton
09 = wheelbase 127"
34 = Fleetside

Driver side center is engine and trans code
LS9 = 350 V8
M38 = TH350 (3sp automatic trans)

J70 = Brake Booster hydraulic (power brakes)

Just a real interesting thread to read....imagine the worker writing numbers/codes all day long, every day of the year for who knows how many years? Hence, the messages from the "paint boys" mentioned above.

I pulled a wood floor LWB off the frame a couple days ago and there had obviously been an 8 1/2 inch piece of paper taped over the header (facing the cab) when they sprayed the red paint. What do you suppose it said; "paint this one red"? Was it a practical joke? Who knows? The outline/silhouette is perfect, even showing the serrated edge on the tape where it had been torn from the roll.

Where are those assembly line guys that stood there for so many years writing w/their grease pencils so they could unlock the secrets for us today?

Is there anyone on the board who worked on the line and actually assembled these trucks at one of the plants?

Yes. Flint Assembly, starting in June of 1979.

I was 17 years old and took one week off after graduating high school before I started work.

I'm spilling the beans here but T4 on the firewall references a build with upper AND lower molding - T2 denotes a build with upper OR lower molding but I can't recall which. Who has a T2 truck to help?
