And now I can see!

I posted a thread a couple days ago bemoaning the fact that the side mirrors bought from Brothers and other stores will not work on the passenger side. It was then I found this was a common comment and yet Brothers, et al continue selling these as fitting 71-72 C10's. I initially thought about cutting the shaft between the two swivel balls and welding a short extension. Then when looking into the mirror from the bottom I could see that it was threaded. I applied a LOT of pressure with needle nose vise grips and backed the mirror off from the mount. It took a LOT of grunting ,... I'm pretty sure they used Lok Tight on the threads. Once off, we reinstalled the threaded portion back into the base only 2 1/2 turns and then put a SS nut between the base and the swivel on the mirror. I also had to Dremel a part of the retaining flange on the swivel/ball to gain enough movement for the mirror to function as it should. (Someone else did that previously somewhere out there. But w/o extending the mirror armature, I don't think it worked well). This works. I can see the side of the truck from my position in the driver's seat. Once you have the mirror apart, there are several other ways to "skin this cat". I just took the easiest. (I think).

Good thinkin! When it comes time to install my new mirrors, I'll do it this way. Makes sense that the added length on the shaft gives the head of the mirror more rotation. Thanks

Good job getting that handled. Definitely something I'm going to try with mine. if there's red loktite on there a heat gun might make for less grunting. Thanks for posting this solution.

OK,....here are two pics. One is the driver's side. No need for any adjustments. The other shows how I added a spacer nut, (temporarily), to extend the length of the mirror adjustment arm. I will replace the current nut with either SS or with a piece of thick walled SS or aluminum tube.

Remember, these mirrors are threaded and TIGHT! (At least mine was). After removing the mirror by unthreading it, we reinstalled it and only did about 2 1/2 threads in. This adjustment works for the truck seat to be fully aft. If you sit closer, this once again may not give you what you need. (There is a way to extend this even further, but you'd have to thread the inside of the hollow mirror thread to accept a bolt, then weld,...…).

Excellent. I can see this with a piece of polished stainless threaded on one end and tapped on the other to extend the bolt verses the nut.

Great idea. We will do this to Zane's 71. If it works, I will post some pics.

Adding the SS is what I was/am planning on doing. This was just a frustrated stop-gap fix that I did. The armature can even be lengthened more by threading the inside of the mirror threads. (It's hollow). Just install a bolt tack weld and extension, cover with SS,...….

But it's just great that there finally appears to be a relatively simple fix to what all our friends at LMC, Brothers, etc., keep selling us as OER equipment and taking advantage of us and our fondness for our trucks.
