Re: 1971 C/10 to K/20 Conversion

Call me crazy. But this seems like more than a 4" lift.. Tires are 33's. I'm sure it will settle a little bit. Looks like I am for sure gonna do the 40 gallon suburban swap

My truck has BDS 4" lidt and 33" tires in 16.5 rims, it measures about 12 1/4" at the front fender well, i didn't measure the rear but its pretty symmetrical front to back.

Can't tell from your picture but how's it hangin'? Did you move make rear of springs compression hangers from tension. That could account for exta height.

But in the end you might like a couple extra inches.

The frame is stock. I bought a 4" lift kit from rough country. Its an all leaf spring lift. no blocks. the frame is a bare roller, so I think it will settle down with some more weight.

Re: 1971 C/10 to K/20 Conversion

Very nice, Back to the truck stuff. This weekend Jimbo and I went to pick-n-pull and scored a 40 gallon rear mount gas tank with a wonderful 1/8 thick steel protection shield from a suburban. It had EFI so the TBI fuel pump is in the tank. I will just need to run a pressure regulator and it will work for my carb. We also scored the filler neck and even brought the Milwaukee death wheel with us so we could hack the fuel door assembly from the Suburban. Im very excited to pick this one up. I think the weight of all the fuel will help level out the truck and now I feel much better about going on long camping trips with a 383 under the hood. AND!!! the sending unit is the same ohms as my old tank so the gauge works perfect!! : Good Old GM...

There was a NV4500 and a couple 4l80e's at pick n pull, but they were all for 2wd. I am still tempted to pick them up and convert them to 4x4....

To convert an NV4500 to 4 wheel drive you need a 4 wheel drive main shaft.

Im gonna keep my current setup for now. when I blow up the 700r4 or the np208 then I will look into upgrading to a 4l80e/np205 setup. I really enjoy the automatic transmission. My truck came with a th350 and I swapped to a Super t-10 4 speed, but it wasnt as awesome as I had hoped, I had to baby the clutch or it would burn out on accident all the time. I would break tires loose when shifting, it was just too fast and not as plesant to drive. not my style anymore. the 700r4 is a wonderful transmission. The next one will be a 4l80E. but ill cross that bridge when I come to it.

I agree with your plan, I think that the 700r4 np208 is a great combination! There are many reasons I'm using a 700r4 and np241 combonation my self

Re: 1971 C/10 to K/20 Conversion

Well. when I first got the gas tank from the suburban I figured I could just make my own crossmembers to install it, But the straps were stuck to the old ones, So over the weekend we went back to cut out the front and rear gas tank crossmembers from the suburban. it was no fun. I had to borrow some extra batteries for my grinder. we ended up cutting sections out of the floor so that we could reach the 8 top rivets. but we finally got them. Im happy. now my tank install should be very simple. drill a couple holes. yay!

Re: 1971 C/10 to K/20 Conversion

Well. It's been a while. But I have been working on the truck every weekend. I have made serious progress on the wiring, and yesterday I got the cab back on the body. It's pretty exciting to me. Seeing it like this. Really makes me wanna throw it back together and drive it asap! Today I patched the gas tank holes that were stabbed by the wonderful employees at pick n pull, we got the 40 gallon suburban tank ready to go.

I'm liking this build! I have a very similar project. A 70 2wd going to 4x4, except I'm using lighter axles and a sm465 because I've had some bad experiences with the old 700r4

Re: 1971 C/10 to K/20 Conversion

Well the past few days I have been working on project 40 gallon suburban gas tank... I had to remove the rear crossmember (6 rivets) from my truck, and I also had to remove the rear brake line bracket from the frame (2 rivets). the front crossmember from the suburban is put in the rear of my truck (in order for the fuel filler to be on the drivers side) and it is taller than the old one. so I had to cut relief notches in the suburban crossmember. I finally got it up in place and its going to work out! Yesterday I started running the fuel and brake lines along the frame rail. I will update with more pics later.

Sounds good, I have the old exhaust that I put together about 2 years ago. I just need to chop it up and make a few adjustments.. Its 2 1/2 dual with an H pipe and walker quiet flow SS mufflers. Im gonna run cast iron manifolds from a 70's or 80's truck.
