Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

Didn't mess with the dipstick, but did get the clutch slave in, and got to take it for a drive! It was only down to the end of my road and back, but she was totally under her own power the whole way.

It was shuddering any time I accelerated, so I think it is either timing, or the clutch. It seemed to idle fine, and if I kept the clutch in, it ran smooth, but the second I started letting it out, it started shuddering.

After getting it back into the garage, I backed it out again, and took a hose to her, so every time we look at it, we don't end up getting dirty. She looks pretty sitting out in the sun!

Haha sounds like fun! We did almost exactly the same thing with my dads 70 C20 after we pulled the bed off (except no front fenders and 5 gallon buckets to sit on), we drove it down to the car wash to clean everything we could now get to.

I told my son as I was zip tying the fuel line in there, that I had to redneck it together. He just laughed.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

I am lining up someone with a timing light... or I'll just go buy another one of my own. (mine is a war prize for the ex) I have looked through numerous threads on here, and anywhere else I can find information, and can't seem to come up with what I need to know.

According to the service manual, the timing is supposed to be set to 5 degrees. According to the timing (pulley?/disk?) on the crank, that would be the dot in between the two lines in the picture. If the letters are not visible in the picture, it says from the top down U - D - C - 1 - 10.

I have read many threads about the 305's and no one really seems to say where their timing is set at. I don't currently know where mine is at, until I get the light.

Any suggestions on where to set it, and is there any special procedures to follow with this engine?

I have the Holley 500 carb, and Pertronix ignition, if that affects anything.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

I always set mine with a vacuum meter instead of a timing light.
With a "T" connect the meter between the carb and the vacuum advance, then dial your distributor in to where you have the strongest vacuum.

This is after making sure your carb is dialed in, of course.
Not sure what your altitude is there in Idaho where you live, but in Spokane we are between 1800 at the base of the falls to 2200 at the top of the South Hill, not that a couple hundred feet will make much difference, but a thousand or more does.

Anyone that has driven to Mt Rushmore, or Crater Lake (Oregon) knows how bad your car will run up in those spots.

Not sure if that helps you any sir, but its a fun story and I like telling it

Nampa is 2500ft. I had to look it up. LOL

Thanks!! Now I need to see if anyone has a vacuum meter lying around too.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

I learned about the vacumm guage trick from an old motorhead, they are not very expensive to buy $20-$30 if I remember correctly.

The trouble was I kept trying to set my timing by the book and the engine was running like crap. Once I dialed it in with the vacuum, it ran like a champ.

Good luck, hope this works better for you!!

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

My son and I worked on fine tuning the carb, and the timing.

Here is a couple of videos of her 3rd trip down the street and back. Still needs some more adjustments to the timing, and or the carb. Still not much power. Better each time though.

The brakes are still very soft. Have to pump them several times to get any noticeable results. They stop the truck, just not very well.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

Nothing to update on!! LOL

My brother is being re-stationed to Hawaii, so we have been trying to hang out as much as possible lately, and been building some garden boxes (see below), so I can have some fresh veggies this year.

The poor beast is just sitting there patiently waiting for me.

I think I may have at least a partial solution to my brakes being soft. I haven't adjusted the shoes back out, after taking them apart to clean them out, so I am hoping that is the problem with them. Probably going to mess with that this weekend. Cross your fingers!

I have a friend who has access to all kinds of new, scrap, automotive wire, and is accumulating the colors and sizes I need to re-wire the truck, so hopefully will be getting on that in the near future too! As she sits right now, the only wiring in there is some under the dash, and the bare basics to start and run. No signals, or lights anywhere have any wire at this point.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

Wife and I were posted to Hawaii for 3 years, we loved it; but man the time went soooooo fast!
We are accustomed to 4 seasons and in Hawaii they dont have that, to us it seemed like one super long summer, which is why when we were standing in the airport to leave we were like: What just happened???

Where at in Hawaii? If he's army or navy and needs anything give him my info. If he's a marine he's on the other side of the island and I wouldn't be much help....

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

He is excited to go, and pretty bummed at the same time. His 13yo. daughter has to stay here with her mom, but luckily he will be back on a pretty regular basis.

He sold his truck, and bought a motorcycle counting on the nice weather over there. LOL

He is in the Air Force, so will be at Hickam.

Cetacean6 thanks for the offer! Awesome CC you have! Nice score! When will you be back stateside?

I work at Schofield Barracks, and know the area well. I'm planning a trip back to Wa in late July so I can tear down and dip/blast my cc.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

Did you ever figure out how original your 4x4 is. Like you I have a converted 2x4 to a 4x4 and it has been a fun project for my son and I...My running gear is from a mid 70's chevy 4x4 short box but I have had some minor issues with engine parts which push it into the 80's for donor parts. Your last post was from 2010...any updated pics or progress? I don't see too many 4x4's on this site.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

ABX131, I posted a video of us taking it for a drive back on 4/29/12.

Mine is a factory 4x4. Although one of the PO's changed out the rear axle at some point.

You may have me confused with another thread.

I agree 4x4's are not too common on here, we need to band together! LOL
