automatic shifter has play

My automatic shifter on the steering column has alot of play in it example when i am in Drive it drops down to look like it is in 2nd. any suggestions easy fixes for this?

Its most likely the bushings in the shift lever at the bottom of the column and at the transmission.

If you look at the linkage closely under the truck, you will see the problem. The "bellcrank" (for lack of a better word) wears in a couple of spots, as does the part that rides against the "bellcrank" and attaches to the transmission shift shaft with 1 nut. They are no longer available to buy new, so I took both of mine out and carefully welded up the worn spots, then ground them a bit for a good fit. It made a HUGE difference. I hope that makes sense.
