700R4 install

i have 3 builds that 'm working with a 1968 longhorn that had a 396 400 Now will be converted to 250 inline 6 with 700R4 converting it to 1/2 ton by changing front spindles and 1/2 rear end everything it staying stock No lowering for this long truck 8 1/2 foot bed its fully loaded with air power steering and brakes now will have disc


the 1968 Gmc suburban with get a 700R4 it has a 350 in it and nothing else will be done

Have a 1971 Cheyenne 1/2 ton putting a 700R4 in it its fully loaded.

Now I've had 2 tilt column in my trucks and they been nothing but pain in the butts.reason why what do you use to pull your self into the trucks the steering wheel well ask most guys why so many people stay with the standard stock column

Go to Bowtie Overdrives. They have everything you will need to install a 700r4. I put one in my 71. They also have some good how-to sections that were very helpful.

you can run a cooler if you want but best is through rad

You need a flexplate (and bolts) and matching starter, radiator with cooler in it, cooler lines (these can possibly come from the donor vehicle), complete shift linkage for a column shift, and torque converter bolts. The linkage bracket on the transmission needs to be from a column shift. You will have to move the crossmember and shorten the driveshaft. BowTie Overdrives may have a different indicator or you can just leave that alone.

Most important is hooking up the detent cable to the carb. That controls how/when it shifts. If its not right you can burn up the trans. Bowtie overdrive sells the kits to give you the proper geometry. Also the wiring for the lock up.

I believe most 700r4's had an electronic speedo, so if you want to use your stock speedo, you will need some kind of adapter.
