I'm scatchin' my head about this one!

I have a customer who owns a 76 El Camino. We has replaced all 4 headlights with the h4 conversion lights and bulbs. The bulbs are the Hella Halogen H4
55w lo / 100 watt high beam bulbs.
when he turns his lights on (lo beam), the top lights come on but they are in the 100watt side instead of the 55 watt. The high beams are on also but in 55 watt side. The high beam should not be coming on at all in lo beam mode. When he clicks over to high beam the high beam becomes bright (100 watt) and the lo beam goes back to 55 watt.

Anybody know what might be causing this?

Could it be a grounding problem? Sounds like the low beams are grounding themselves through the high beams.

I would say that at least part of your problem is that the "high" beams are just that, high only...........the do not have a "low".
The quad headlight arrangement in those days had single element bulbs in the high beams, so adding a bulb with 2 elements has to cause some kind of problem. How are they wired?

I thought about that as well. This is the first time I have ever had a 4 headlight system do this with the H4 conversion. He says the wiring has not been modified from stock. I am going to see if I can find some single element conversion bulbs and see if that will help.

This is for a "relay"upgrade but it it might help in under standing the bulb wiring.

This may not be helping you at all but this one shows your filaments.

Check the filaments on those lights to see which does what. I've read that the contacts aren't in the usual places, so you've got to re-arrange the harness pins for it to work properly.
