Surface Rust on Door...Options

Pulled the door on 72' K-20 as I start the restoration. Bottom rusted out, patch panels are on the way.

Question on surface rust -- there were several scratches in the paint that led to rust developing on the door. I've sanded most down, but there is still some pitting.

This truck is going to be a driver.

Would a good 2k epoxy primer as my base seal things up and prevent rust from advancing?

What are your recommendations? Thanks, Daubs

Re: Surface Rust on Door...Options

Do you have any access down at the bottom for planishing the weld? If it doesn't get planished to remove the shrinking effect, it is going to look like the Atlantic Ocean. If you don't have access for planishing, I would recommend a full door skin that has the seam up farther where (if) you can reach it. New door skin takes care of the issue.

If you must use that one, I'd suggest a spot blaster/media blaster to remove any/all scale from inside the pits so you will have good adhesion for the epoxy. A crud thug would clean that up as well. The media blaster (the operator, not the machine) should know what he's doing as this area is very prone to warping if they don't...
