2.5l manual trans help. ML3

I have a 91 S10 next door to me that needs a ML3 Borg-Warner five speed. It grinds in every gear including reverse and is the same noise. According to him it went POP or pow and wouldn't go no more. I am looking for a tranny that might take its place. $550 is the cheapest I have found. $1800 for a new not rebuilt unit from my GM parts guy that is a good friend of mine. The truck is used and slightly abused but would make a good backup for my other DD. Is there any other trans that might work? Maybe an ealier 4 speed? Or another type 5 speed. I know the 4 cylinder really makes it a kinda bastard to find. Point me in any direction as I have not a clue. Even if it is help with the internals as I am not afraid to take it apart and repair within reasonable costs for a old beat up truck. I know somone out there knows so I am askin' Thanks, Dave.

Try a T-5 tranny. Rebuild kits are not too bad. You can save youself some $$$$ by rebuilding it yourself. A good factory manual has instructions.

Are you sure its the trans, and not a broken clutch?
A friend thought he had a broken input shaft, but turned out to be the center of the friction disc broke.
New clutch, problem solved.

Mythought exactly. i would investigate further. But to let you know, there was a 5 spd being advertise on local classifieds for 150 bucks.

I can't see the 2.5 iron duke EVER ripping the guts out of a tranny (unless it was run dry of fluid). I know because I drove one for 280,000 miles! I'd pull it and check the clutch, something may have come apart.

Re: 2.5l manual trans help. ML3

What part of MO ya from Dave? I'm in the northeast corner. I think I still have the 4 speed out of my old 87 2.5l truck. But by swapping to a 4 speed you'd lose the overdrive 5th gear. Not worth it in my opinion.
The trans in your truck is just a T5. Same one used in the 2.8 v6 trucks. If you're within driving distance of St. Louis or KC, they both have U-Pull-It type salvage yards. You could get a trans there for about 50 bucks.
