How do you remove the wire from the heater/AC controls?

71 Chevy:

If you have A/C your duct has two cables, one for the "inside air" and the other the A/C. The end of the wire for the cable wraps around the whatchamacallit on the lever (what is that called anyway?).

My primary question is, how do you remove this wire from this whatchamacallit? My first thought was to just unwrap it, but it's a little tough and I don't want to break anything. The little cap on this may pop off, maybe it's crimped on or just can't be removed at all.

Here's a picture of the part. Thank you

The push nut needs to be popped off. Replacements can be had from your local parts store.

Re: How do you remove the wire from the heater/AC controls?

Usually, you can work them off by rocking back and forth while pulling. Or, just cut them off with side cutters and replace as suggested above. If you look at your picture above, you really don't even need them. Not much chance that cable is coming off the pin anyway. So, a loose fit of push nut should not be of much concern.

There are push nuts that hold the cables on, are these used on the control unit on the back of the dash? Anyone have a pic for reference? I am a visual kinda guy...

Not sure yet, but doesn't sound right. I need to figure out my nuts before I dive into the control unit.

Yes they are also attached with push nuts on the back of the controller.

Re: How do you remove the wire from the heater/AC controls?

I've got a lot to learn. Something new all the time. Thanks for the information. I'll throw the glasses on tomorrow, "see" about pulling my nuts off and moving onto the next.

Edit: Alright, dog gone it. I put my glasses on, looked and my eyesight is just poor. I should know better, and need to face the reality I've become eye-glasses dependent. Could be mistaken, but those nuts are more commonly called speed nuts. I've used them once or twice. Here are some:

Mine look more like push washers instead of nuts.

Re: How do you remove the wire from the heater/AC controls?

I bought 50 "Push Retainers" from Napa (Lowes/Home Depot no have). They carry two sizes. I figured they were the smaller ones, but sales dude figured the larger, as the outside diameters are equal. Well, the hole is too large and need to return for smaller. Really, the old ones seem to still grab. I snapped one, but one pin had two nuts on.

Re: How do you remove the wire from the heater/AC controls?

Exchanged my nuts for 50 of the smaller ones. Turns out what's required is not 1/8" or 3/16" diameter..... FRUSTRATING. They're pretty tough, which is one reason the vise tears them up trying to drill. (I got 50...). UPDATE, nope, they're just not made to be any larger, even if you manage not to break one it won't last. I'll just go with plan B. http://www.classicparts.com/1947-84-.../#.VgYWB8tVhHw

You with experience probably know the A/C diverter is gone, because the rubber surrounding the hinge is wasted. They just weren't made to last 45 years, or at least that's my report.

Re: How do you remove the wire from the heater/AC controls?

My diverter flap was bad also. I decided to try and fix it and if it didn't work, I was no worse off and would have had to buy one anyway. I cut two small pieces of sheet metal and used some epoxy and sort of buttered both pieces of sheet metal and put on both sides of the rubber flapper and used a couple pairs of vise grips to hold it in place and let it dry for 2 days. That was last summer, still working like a charm. Sorry, wish I had taken some pics but didn't. Visualize a sandwich with the sheet metal being the bread and the rubber flapper being the meat. Oops, just made myself hungry, gotta go...
