Talking Noob with a LWB ‘72 Cheyenne 396 NEED ADVICE

Hey all! Glad to be here. I just nabbed this beaut and I have a few pieces of the puzzle to complete.

Primarily, it needs to have some love given to the bed floor. I’m really leaning toward a wood floor to replace the steel one that has some minor rust holes in it. All in all it’s really solid, but I love the look of wood. I’m leaning toward a bedwoodandparts.com RetroLiner. Anyone have any experience here? Advice? I’m really attracted to what I perceive as a super easy installation.

Also, I want to replace the wheels and tires. I’d love some advice. I prefer the look of a 20” wheel.

Anyone have any other suggestions? I think she’s pretty sexy as she is, but even the hottest go under the knife for enhancement every now and then. 😆

A very nice truck you have. Love the color combo and the fact it's a big block. I myself have never been a fan of the overlay type bed kits. It would seem that it would trap water and cause rust( some cope around the bed tubs).

I had these 17's on mine. I sold them and I'm looking at 20's now. Of course I keep a set of whitewalls on rallies for when I'm in that mood.

Thanks for the compliments. I totally understand the concern about trapping water, although they say it drains on their website. Not sure how.

Is there a good resource anywhere detailing the process of doing a steel to wood conversion? I mean, how hard is it?

Mar-K should have everything you need for the conversion. On the website look under tips and tricks. There is a how- to on steel to wood conversion.https://www.mar-k.com/

Re: Noob with a LWB ‘72 Cheyenne 396 NEED ADVICE

The whole bed needs to come apart to covert to wood. Then you need a new/different rear sill and either a weld on strip or different front panel. Those two cuzz of the different heights between steel and wood. That means paint on front panel. Almost same price ( 1k) to go back steel or go wood. Less labor to stay steel, but bed still has to come off/apart. Also think long term. Wood needs revarnished after every few yrs, even using the good stuff, like Epifanes spar varnish.

Truck looks great as it is.....I also considered wood but the expense and work to get it done was way off for me. You could have the rust areas repaired and use tinted bed liner. Just another 2 cents.

If you go the patch route, I've got a swb fleetside bed floor you can have for nothing. I'm not that far from you. PLENTY of patch material left for someone to use.

Btw, are there any vendors on here that sell wheel and tire packages for smoking deals to forum members?
