My 64 Project

Hey all, figured I would show off my project a bit, not the prettiest thing ever but she's still in the works.
How she sat when I brought her home, fixed a few odds and ends, biggest thing being new front fenders. Now I'm waiting on money and space before tearing into it.
The eventual plan is to get the body fixed up, swap the frame for the one out of the 66 roller I also have, and pop in a 5.3 and T56. May also go a bit lower with it as well

Re: My 64 Project

Thanks, think I may come down a bit in the front though. The huge fender gap bugs me. Second pic is a photoshop, inspiration to keep building.

Re: My 64 Project

A little update on this project. Ended up trading the C10 for a 66 GMC short wide custom cab. Here are a few shots of the truck when I got it.
Pulled it out, cleaned it up, and threw some new wheels on it.

Re: My 64 Project

Moved to a new place that has a garage, meaning the GMC could make it out of storage and progress could be made.
Started cleaning out the interior. The seats ended up in the trash.
Also swapped out the front fenders for some in better shape.

Re: My 64 Project

Got some small stuff knocked out. Picked up a bumper and got it hung. Also found a new bulb for the headlight.
Swapped out the steering column for a nicer setup that i had laying around.

Re: My 64 Project

Need to get this thread back up to speed. A lot has changed in a short time. Since the last update, got the front end updated with 73-87 a arms, drop spindles, and some lowering springs. The rear end got a flip and I also removed a few overload springs from the leaf pack.

Re: My 64 Project

The engine and trans finally got set down in the truck, everything lines up and fits perfectly. Also went and picked up a donor parts truck for a few parts. Personally I think patina teal is the best color for these trucks.

Re: My 64 Project

Moved the truck to a shop while moving to a new house and ended up losing out a ton of potential work time on it. I did build a new grille for it out of boredom, and got a few small odds and ends done when it returned home.

Re: My 64 Project

Finally got her all together and had a chance to drive out to greaserama this fall. Sadly that was about all the road time she got. Currently the truck is back in the shop having some transmission issues worked out. Once it's done, plans are to replace the floors, raise the bed floor, and notch the rear end. Waiting for it to return while working on a high hump section for the cab.

Re: My 64 Project

Thanks guys! Really hoping I don't lose much of my rake when I notch the rear. The rockabilly hotrod look has kinda grown on me.

I love the stance! Do you mind sharing what size tires you have front and rear?

Thanks man! They're 215/70/15s up front and 275/60/15s in the rear. I need to massage the rear fenders just a hair because they rub slightly, but otherwise they fit great.

Re: My 64 Project

Picked up a pretty solid chevy cab from a few hours south of me the other day. The plan is to try and use the sheet metal I can, and attempt to repair some of the rust on my truck. Looking through a lot of build threads, I've noticed that about 90% of you guys are pulling the cab to do floor work. Am I in for a world of hurt if I try and do this with the cab still on the truck?

Re: My 64 Project

I think it’s a lot easier to pull the cab but would depend how extensive the metal work is if your just changing a couple floor panels it’s probab not worth it. But if your like me and the floor was rotted along with most of the cab supports and rocker panels etc I would pull it just my opinion

My supports are surprisingly solid on here. I plan to pull the rockers and repair/replace them, as well as both footwells in the floor, and the trans tunnel. Otherwise the only real trick I've got is the cab corners. If I had to do supports I would definitely pull it.

Re: My 64 Project

I don’t think I would pull it because all of that stuff is easily accessible without doing so. I’m putting my cab back together right now and I lift it off to get my supports in place but all the floor panels I have been welding in with the cab sitting on the frame I find it’s easier to line stuff back up with it on the frame especially if it’s possible keep the two rear cab bolts tight so the cab can’t move because it’s a bit of a job to realign it

I used the dirty dingo adjustable slider mounts for mine, fit like a glove! The t56 shifter will be in the seat in the stock location. I did a mid shift conversion on mine to get everything where it needs to be. The picture gives a good idea of how it moved the shifter.

Re: My 64 Project

So I got bored while waiting for the gmc to get done in the shop and gutted the parts cab I picked up. Before anyone gets mad, it had no title and there was rot in the roof, so it went to a better place. Surprised how well it held up even with my cutting. Now the floor is ripe for the picking to be used in the gmc.
