Hi all, so I have a 98 Vortec 350 that a had rebuilt back to stock. Except it has a edelbrock carb intake. Because im going that way. So my plan was to put a mechanical fuel pump on it because it has provisions for one. My question is can I do this? I was told that I needed a special pump rod for this? Because its a roller cam I guess? O ya it's going in my 72 k10 swb. Is this true? Any suggestions? Thanks.

you can get one from jegs or summit that has a bronze tip $21 or a roller tip $100+ roller cams are steel not iron and i guess the lobes aren't heat treated. somebody here knows the story. i ran a bronze tip one with a roller years ago. does chevy make a stock one?

Some roller cams don't have a lobe for mech. fuel pump.

Ive never seen a production 98 vortec block have the hole for the pump rod.
Like 1972CST said the Factory Production cam WILL NOT have the lobe

The mount is still cast on the block but there is no hole for the pump push rod. If you are rebuilding a block the hole can be drilled but not on a used install because you risk metal shavings getting into the block. I think that factory cam does not have a lobe for the mech pump. The easiest way would be to go to the parts store and get a universal electronic fuel pump for a carb. like this from autozone.

If you go with an electric fuel pump it is a good idea to also put a fuel pressure regulator in since the Edelbrock carbs like a constant pressure, I can not remember the exact number but I think it is 5 pounds.

Also the fuel pump should be mounted as close to the tank as possible.

Go with an electric pump. You can get a cheap one since you only need 5-6 pounds of pressure. It helps with vapor lock if running high compression or headers. Easier to replace too. I had four different kinds of pumps on my 68 camaro before I went electric.
