Re: '67 Stepper "Laymond"

Thanks everyone.

Well the saga continues with the truck. Jen was out running errands last night and I decided to run to the store to pick up some Octorberfests and something to throw on the grill. Walked out to the garage and decided on a whim to take the truck.

Get in, fire her up, and let it warm up a bit before heading out. Get my tunes going, shut the garage door, pull out into the street and the truck starts to sputter. Its cold so no big deal. WRONG!!!! Pull over on the side of the road, let her warm up, pull back out and the same thing. Did this about 3x in less than a mile. So I limp it into a neighbors drive (had to love the open manifold sound while trying to keep this pile running), mess around with it enough to back out into the road, put it in first and have it die. Pull into the next drive, get out, step into a mud puddle and mess with the carb. Get to the 4 houses down and the truck dies again. Coast into another neighbors yard and decide to check the fuel filter in the carb. It looked good, put it back in, wiped my gasoline covered hands on my shirts, met said neighbors who offered to help push, fired it up, and ran like a champ for the next 100 yards. Back in the garage it goes.

Pretty sure I've figured a few things out: 1) my truck hates me, 2) I was not put on this earth to drive a 6-cyl. truck, and 3) the truck will not be leaving my property again until it is LS powered. I've come to the last straw. Going to LS Fest this weekend will definitely fuel this thought.

Now I have to make definite decisions on this motor which I'm apparently not good at. I prefer to say I'm going to do this and change my mind 100x later on.

Re: '67 Stepper "Laymond"

No work physically on the truck this weekend. Drove down to Bowling Green for LS Fest Friday and had a great time. Even though I went by myself and drove back late that night, it was worth it. I now have a good general direction in how I'm going to build my drivetrain.

Saturday was my future step-daughters birthday party so that took up most of my day.

Today I spent the morning tearing up my lawn mower for the second time this year. Unfortunately this time was catastrophic. That led to me making a complete a** out of myself in front of Jen, neighbors and anyone that drove by. I didn't take it very well. It did however lead to a good conversation between her and I. I've been kind of unhappy with life per say lately and decided some changes need to be made. Nothing bad or life-changing but changes for the better. One of the things is potentially selling the boat and put that money towards finishing the truck. It's a decision I'm going to take a week or two to make. Been debating on that for the last few months anyway. She's completely on board and actually suggested it even though I had thought about it.

I then spent the rest of the weekend replacing the door latch in her Accord. Apparently it's a common problem and a complete PITA to replace. I had to take the door panel off with the door shut, disassemble the door lock/latch and pray I hit this little tiny latch blind folded. It was a success but I have nearly 9 hours in the job. I'll light that car on fire before I do that again.

Now I'm in the garage enjoying a pumpkin ale and watching my Colts getting clobbered.

Re: '67 Stepper "Laymond"

Sometimes things have a tendency to build up and we need to vent, it happens. If good things come from it than its probably safe to say what happened was a good thing. Every time i turn around its 2 steps forward and a step back, your not alone in your little headaches that pop up, keep at it and you will overcome.

I'll be watchin' this one. I currently have a 250 in mine, and actually plan to rebuild and reuse it. I understand your frustration though. Also been in the dilemma of selling my Yamaha Rhino to put the money into my truck. I wish you the best on your build!

Re: '67 Stepper "Laymond"

Thank you for the kind words.

I realized today that its been around a year since I decided to make the leap and get into trucks. Its been an interesting year to say the least and I've learned a lot along with meeting some great people. I've also spent more money on my garage and truck(s) than I care to remember. Overall I'm very happy about my decision and its good being back into modding vehicles once again. Now only if I can get moving at a faster pace. Figured I would share a few pics of my past 12 month journey.

This is what what sitting in my garage this time last year. Built it and owned it for 12 years:

I then tried to buy this:

But the guy didn't call me back until the night after I brought this home

My buddy bought the step-side and did this to it:

Found out the blue truck's frame was bad and bought the red truck

Everything else is in this build thread and the truck now looks like this

Can't wait to see what the next 12 months have in store.

Re: '67 Stepper "Laymond"

Nice fall evening and have the place to myself. Out in the garage plumbing up my air compressor, FINALLY!!! Had most of the kit for nearly a year but I tend to overplan/think things. It's a 60-gallon and I'm using the RapidAir 3/4" Maxline kit in a loop to 5 drops in the garage. It's going to be real nice to have air everywhere.

Nice year in review. If you want to plumb any more air lines, my barn could use some done.

Re: '67 Stepper "Laymond"

Todd,

I'll be over once I get my truck finished. Shouldn't be too long.

Well the saga continues with the truck. Pulled it out of the garage today and now the damn thing is stuck in reverse. I so hate the drivetrain in this truck. The second I'm done with my air compressor, the tear down will begin.

Not done with the air plumbing but getting there. Really like this kit but I'd recommend an extra set of hands. Should have it finished by this weekend.

Re: '67 Stepper "Laymond"

Its been a while since I've given an update so here goes:

In the past month I've spent more time and money on my garage than I care to admit to one other person in my household. My air compressor project spiraled out of control but it should do anything I ever need to do. I also picked up a 44" HF tool box. Never thought I would spend that much money on a single item from HF, but so far I really like it and appears you can't beat it for the money. Now that that is all out of the way, I've got to winterize the boat and then its time to blow the truck apart.

While my project thread has been dormant, I have not. I've been reading, researching and collecting parts for this winter. In fact I will be calling Travis later today to order some misc. Porterbuilt parts (no dropmember at this time though ).

I was all geared up for a mild DM, until I started putting everything I need for my motor swap in a spreadsheet. That adds up real quick! I'm basically going to use everything I already have and get the necessary stuff to get it on the road (without sacrificing quality). I can always add later.

Basically my plan (for now):

Install PB Stage I front, Stage II basic rear with adjustable TA and rear frame crossmembers.

Air Management (probably going to pull the trigger on e-level with a single 480 compressor.

Install my LQ4/4L80e with TSP Torquer V3 (already have), necessary valvetrain upgrades, Holley pan, longtubes (leaning towards Hedmans) and stall.

No Limit front and rear sway bars

If funds allow, replace the KYB shocks Ridetech HQs.

That should deplete my mod fund pretty quick but should yield a fun truck to drive.

Here's a couple of pics of my garage additions and one of my tailgate chains I got from Southern Kentucky Classics.

Sounds like a sweet plan.! I'm going to skip the dropmember for now too, but do the a-arms, shocks and sway bars. An LS is in the cards, hopefully next year.

Thanks. I sooo want to do the dropmember now, but I also want to be able to drive the truck next year. I figured I can always add one later, unless I win the giveaway

Killer progress on the shop! Dig the truck plans, too. I've done some "scaling back" on my build as of late as well. Like you, I'm not sacrificing quality though.

Keep it up!

Re: '67 Stepper "Laymond"

Thanks Robbie! Your project is off to a good start as well.

Well ordered my PB parts today from Travis. Hope to see them in a couple of weeks as he has almost everything in stock. That's real nice! I bought their trans, trailing arm, and rear frame crossmembers along with an air management bracket. Not the cool stuff but all very functional for my build.

I'm still working on headers. I want long tubes BAD but having an issue finding ones I know that will fit, be 1 7/8" and more important not cost a fortune. I don't really have a problem paying for quality but if I do go turbo I don't want to have $1000 in headers. So far the best ones that fit the bill are the DT 323-YCs at $637. I was hoping to find a set under $400 but no such luck at this time. Plus no one can guarantee they will work with the trans crossmember. Half the fun is in the research right?

Re: '67 Stepper "Laymond"

Really like the plans you have for the truck, that motor will sound like a beast with that cam in it Don't sweat not being able to do the dropmembers now, you can always swap them in later, the key is to be able to drive it right can't really help you on the headers but I have seen a lot of people run the Pacesetter Trailblazer SS long tubes cause they are a lot cheaper then others.

Sorry I'm going to disappoint you with that one. Had I kept the mustang I would consider it. Having always had a quick car, its killing me not being able to get my speed fix. I just wanna go fast.
