Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

Structure, I am in Tulsa, doing 2 gm pickups 1 66 gmc 1 65 chevy, I am in the same spot you were the last time you showed pics, cab off the frame working on the floor of the 66. Give me a call at the shop or if you are on the the west side of Tulsa stop by and see my build.......here is a link to pictures of my 66 gmc, the pics toward the end show the rust on the floor of my truck which is not nearly as bad as yours. Oh we used the same color scheme on our engines I really like your 5.3 I used a 5.7 TBI out of a 91 suburban...........cheaper............. I would love to see your truck call me at the shop 446-2245 Kieth

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

Kieth those are nice pics. thanks. I thought about going with a 90s era fuel injection but this one came up on craigslist so I bought it. If I ever get this truck driving down the road I'll bring it by your shop! I'm clear on the other side of tulsa. If I ever get over to the west side I'll drop in. Thanks for the invite!

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

It's freaking cold out so I'm not working real fast. Maybe a couple hours a night 2 times a week or so. Welding in patch panels is a lot more work than it sounds too. I've got most of the floor in on the right side.

I bought this undercoating gun from eastwood and used it to spray por 15 all over the nook and crannies. Worked out pretty well.

Did a little more welding on the pillar

Got the back floor panel trimmed up and set in

The gap was way too much becuase of the way I marked the patch piece from the piece I cut out. I use this copper spoon I picked up from harbor freight to back up my welds and it works really good. Good for small holes as well.

Here I've got the panel just welded in

Most of the floor is welded in and just needs to be sanded smooth. Which for me takes just as long if not longer than actually welding these panels in.

Robert,
The floor is coming out great! I like the spoon idea too. And you are so right about it being so cold here.....dang. I wussed out on working on mine all week. No heat in the shop. I hope to get a wood burning heater before next winter.

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

I've got a large heater in my non-insulated 20x20 shop. It works really good, but crap setting on the concrete floor is like setting on a block of ice.

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

Nice job. I have that spoon also. Work good. My 30 x 40 shop is insulated. Cost $2,200 extra but was well worth it. It's great for hot or cold. I installed a swamp cooler, and have a propane dual burner and electric heaters. It gets up to 60 to 65 degrees when it's in the low 40's out side.

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

Guys thanks for the post. I am slowly insulating the shop and replacing the sheetrock. When I first bought my house it was a decrepit side garage with no utilities. The lower 2 foot was almost rotted to nothing. I though I'd knock it down and put a larger shop behind it, but... heh that ain't gonna happen. I'm good to have a 2nd garage to work in.

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

hey structures. I saw you had your engine hoist in your cab. How were you rigging it up so that you could pick the cab up without it tilting foward? Me and 4 of my friends picked mine up but I want to pick it up with my engine hoist when I dont have any help.

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

Take a look at these...

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=346948

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=113397

I basically did something similar, but more of the poor boy method. I had a 6 or 7 foot long piece of 3" channel. I laid the channel on the hoist arm and used the back of the channel to pick up on the roof. I would think a 4x4 would work just as well.

Yup, can't live without it. When I first opened Sportruck Specialties, my wife said do you really need a lift? I said I was a professional, and never worked without one at all the shops I worked for. After she sees how much I use it, now she says "How can people work with out it" If you have room, it's a great investment. It was only 1 years old when I bought it used 10 years ago for only $1,500

Re: Structures 65 Chevy C10

Thanks guys. I had heard about picking the cab up with the roof but I was not sure if it was strong enough, thats all I need to do is mess my roof up. I can make me one of those metal 2x2 square lift things for my cherry picker. I also like the idea of the auto lift. I would have a lift already if my dumb a$$ would have built my shop with a taller ceiling. We put a lift in my cousins 30x40 shop with 12 foot ceiling and also built a paint room inside it. He has a nice shop and I can use it anytime but hes 20 minutes across town. Maybe some day I will build another bay onto my shop with 12 foot ceilings and a lift.

The first time I picked up the cab from the frame, I had heard somewhere to pick it up from the roof. This was before I discovered this website. Anyway I used a tow strap and a front end loader. It was a real cheek squeezer.

It's funny how i buy tools like my drill press, hydraulic press, band saw, etc. and use them all the time. Then I think how did I make it without these things!

still patching

I did take the rocker off the drivers side and was really glad to see the inner side looks way better than the passenger side did.
