Re: Farmers big block

I thought about spraying clear on them but I don't want the possibility of the clear to fail and it's not that hard to repolish.

I have been curious about what to do with these aluminum parts also. I also have an aluminum grill that I want to restore. I started looking around online last night and there are several places around Portland that do anodizing. I haven't checked on prices yet or which ones would do small batch work but it's something to think about.

Re: Farmers big block

I looked in Portland for someone to do the polishing of my aluminum parts. I didn't find anyone. I talked to my painter about clear coating the parts he saind no problem but i,m afraid long term it will give me problems so I will give them a good coat of wax and plain on polishing again down the road.
The pipes for the heater core are aluminum I sanded and polished them and sprayed clear coat on them I will see how that works out.

Yeah, I looked around for someone to do the polishing, too, without any luck, so I'll probably do the polishing myself but the anodizing would be just like putting the factory finish back on over the aluminum.

Nice work

Where did you find an aluminum heater core? I've never seen one.

Re: Farmers big block

I got the seals from Classic Parts. The vent door is two pieces with the seal sandwiched between them held together by rivets. I bought the rivets from Classic as well but either they sent the wrong ones or I ordered the wrong ones, they were to small. I used #10x1/4 SS machine screws with nuts that have an attached star washer and polished the screw heads.

Update 12/4/2011

Well the truck should of been painted by know the painter needs another two weeks to complete owell things happen. It's christmas tree season anyway and that keeps me busy. I'm working on the exhaust and need to run the rear brake line so when I bring the cab home I can mount it on the frame.

Re: Farmers big block

Do you know if your heater core is the 9.5" delux/recirculating, it looks about right from your pic.

And what model is your Hobart welder in the background?
I have a Handler 180, and we are getting to know each other now.... LOL

The heater is the deluxe mobel. The welder is a Hobart Handler 140. I have been using a Miller 35 for the last 20 years but it never welded lite gage steel very well this 140 works great I just wish I would of bought it earler.

I have just started working with mine, after a frustration session I down loaded the owners manual from online and read that

Of course that helped!! But for welding up holes in body sheet, it still seems to be a bit much with .023 wire, Amps set to #1 and my wire feed set at 25.

I had to turn my gas pressure down at the tank too... I was doing more cutting than welding.

Do you use an auto darkening hood lens too? Being able to see what I am doing especially at the start I have learned is crucial.

Re: Farmers big block

I have the same hobart handler 140 welder. Im using .025 wire in mine I think with the unimix gas. If you need to weld a hole up you can always clamp a scrap peice of aluminum or brass behind it and it will absorb some of the heat and you want blow through the metal, plus it leaves a flat surface on the backside. The weld will not stick to the aluminum or brass.

Re: Farmers big block

I've looked back thru the whole thread, and I don't see a mention of which headers you used. Looks like they fit fairly well. What kind of info can you share about them?

I have been welding my hole life. In the last five years or so I found it harder to see the weld so I bought a (Quality) Miller auto darkening helment and a magnifying lens insert BAMMO I CAN SEE

The Headers are Headman mid length not sure of the part # they fit real well.
The front left tube is close to the top of the tubular motor mount.

Re: Farmers big block

update 12/16/2011

I had to relocate the fuel and brake lines to give room for the exhaust to go over the diff. So I had the brake line tools out of I ran the front brake lines. I didn't want the brake lines to go around the edge of the frame rail so I made a bulkhead fitting and drilled two holes in the top of the frame rail alot cleaner.

I recived my Magnaflow mufflers, I think there to big 5X11X22 . I didn't want the truck to be real load but I think I need to drop down a size.

Yes I do. I have a 454 in my 'burb. I tied into the exsisting exhaust system so I used 3'' out of the headers and then transistioned to 2.5'' roughly under the seats. The mufflers are Flowmaster, I think 50's series. It has a nice mellow rumble without a lot of resonance and not loud at all. I like it better than my SB with 40's.

1/15/2012 update

Good day in the shop, got the stainless steel windshield trim cleaned up and ready to go on. The painter of the truck called he wanted me to come look at the bottom of the cab. I have been waiting for this day for over a year. Both the wife and I realy like the color. I will be able to bring the truck home this week.
