Rescued 66 GMC

I found this 66 gmc for sale. It was sitting for a couple years because the ring gear was broken. The guy said he drove it daily until that happened. I put a battery in it and she fired up. Made my offer then towed it home. Upon adjusting the valves I discovered the motor was recently rebuilt which is the big 305 V6. Also found new exhaust with dual Flowmasters. She sounds good. Next was figure out the game plan. Went and purchased parts and started working. My goal was to be done start to finish in 3 weeks. The truck has a 4 speed stick which works great. Wish it was an auto, be oh well.

Re: Rescued 66 GMC

The gmc has a few cool options. Factory spot light, dash clock and original radio. First the front bumper was replaced with a newer one. Brand new rear bumper, new tires and got the stock wheels powdercoated white. Tires are 215/70r15 on the front and 235/75r15 on the rear. I like a tire rake. Since this came with rear leafs, I did a flip which dropped it 6.5". Up front went Western Chassis 2.5" drop coils along with ABS Brake brand 2.5" drop spindles and complete 6 lug disc brakes.

Couple interior pics. Funny this good looking seat was hiding under a Pep Boys blacket seat cover. Much better now.

Re: Rescued 66 GMC

Thanks! Ya I forgot to mention that I did a simple notch. Homemade welded. I didn't see the need for a step notch since its not bagged. I wanted simple and basic.

Re: Rescued 66 GMC

Nice truck! Love me some GMC V6! Have a 305E in my 64 with a 4 barrel and dual exhaust. Flowmaster 40's. Runs and pulls great. You'll like the 3.54 ratio...these are low RPM engine with lots of grunt.

Unfortunately there isn't one available. haha A 4 down to 2 will have to be used, or modifying the manifold by opening it up can be done. I'm getting a manifold to modify for mine.

Re: Rescued 66 GMC

Gotcha..well I just rebuilt the stromberg carb and it runs pretty good. I build hi-performance v8s so Im not used to this lack of power, but it's kind of neat just leaving it all stock for a change.

Yeah, these motors were not built for speed. The E version produced 152 hp at 3800 rpm and 280 foot pounds at 1600. They are slow, but with dual exhaust and a bigger carb you'd be in for a pleasant surprise on how it will wake up. These engines where about the most overbuilt and stout boat anchors you'll ever see. lol The 305E weighed in at well over 800 pounds! They are known for lasting up to 250,000 easily. In fact, a guy I know has one with 450,000 on it. Here's a site where you can get Lot's of info on these.
www.6066gmcguy.com/EngineData.html
I think after some reading you'll enjoy the engine a little more. haha Coming down from a hi-perf v8 to a torque monster v6 is a tough thing. But if your ever not happy with the 305 you can always get a 478. Here's a video of mine doing an acceleration test. This was with the stock single exhaust and a 4 barrel mod. Have yet to do it with the new dual exhaust.

Re: Rescued 66 GMC

Installed the old gun rack today. Since the glovebox knob is missing, I went with a fake glass knob from Lowes.

Re: Rescued 66 GMC

I got my custom cab trim back from the polisher and reinstalled. Then I painted my new caps and put those on to give it that originalish look, but lower.
