Re: I did what I was scared of today

I know this will sound annoying and pedantic, but it worked for me. Before I rebuilt my first engine read about 3 different books on how to do it. By halfway through the second one I was starting to get it. By the end of the third I think I had it. But I sure didn't know what I needed to know after the first, let alone before it.

Anything by Rick Voeglin is usually good. His Engine Blueprinting book is great.

Every motor I ever built made more than 500 horsepower and is STILL running today. But I am glacially slow and careful and clean because I am not an expert.

>>When i rebuilt the engine about a year ago i thought i was being thorough and "thought" i did everything by the book/manual.<<

Could you provide more detail on what you did and/or had done on the "rebuild"?

machine shop did all of their necessary work. decking, honing, cleaning, pressed cam bearings, they also did the valves

i assembled everything. i did re-use the old head bolts...i'm sure i screwed up there.

i dropped the head off yesterday. i'll get new head bolts this time

You don't need new head bolts, I'll bet. They are not the type that torque to stretch like a lot of the newer stuff.
