What air cleaner in a 4wd?

Long time listener first time called here. Well, not first time; just long time since my last post. I have a 72 that has a small block 383 and I am running an Edelbrock 1826 650 cfm carb and now am switching to a Holley. My air cleaner is a 14 by 4” round k&n with 1 1/4” drop bass and just barely tucks under the cowl. This is a 4x4 K10 short fleet. I am assuming with the Holley the air cleaner will be in the same spot and drop base will not fit over the Holley, thus raising the air cleaner into the cowl. What are my options? Show me what you got please!

14X2 K&N style filter is more then enough for 500+ hp. So you could use a shorter filter, and not loose anything there.

Since you live near Pismo I would suggest a K&N pre filter so sand does not get packed into the filter. It robs a few hp, but well worth it.

I used one to dress up my F150 I dolled up to bomb the dunes, and found out it honestly worked quite well. My air filter was fine, but my friends were packed with sand. They had to sacrifice t-shirts to finish up the day off road.

Re: What air cleaner in a 4wd?

The reproduction GM drop base air cleaner (65-71 Corvette, 67-69 Z/28) sells for about $50 base only and drops significantly more than any of the aftermarket dropbases and is profiled to clear a Holley carb

On my Jimmy I have a no-drop base with a 4" K&N and it clears by just a little. The stock setup with the spacer that connects to the valve cover vent was so tall there is usually plenty of room in these trucks.

Re: What air cleaner in a 4wd?

Thanks for all the input. I will post up what I come up with. Good to know it clears with a no drop base. I have the same element as you, so we will give that a try.
