Re: Diesel does a build

Sorry guys, been slackin lately. I leave for work when it's dark and get home when it's dark, so I haven't accomplished much lately. I did rebuild my heater control unit and painted the housing the same color as the wheels and roof.

Also found a 1972 Nebraska truck plate on the bay, so thats what I'm rockin on the front now.

And some crappy weather pics just for the heck of it. Boy, she could sure use a nice wash

Re: Diesel does a build

I've got a little done. Not much. The past couple of month's have been cold as h-e-double hockey sticks. Supposed to be real nice this weekend, so I plan on getting some stuff done and taking some pics. Stay tuned.

Re: Diesel does a build

Alright homies, here we go. Finally had some nice weather yesterday, so I got a little done. Replaced my ancient Holley with a newer Street Avenger. It starts and drives a lot better now, but when I really get on it, she starts to stumble. Gonna try to work that out today. Other than the carb swap, I just did a bunch of small stuff and cleaned her up a little.

My rockin Sparkomatic! I love this thing, because it has a jack on the front that I can hook my iPod into. My second favorite accesory is right next to it. Just for looks, I swear.

The worlds coolest air freshener.

Finally got the pass side door painted.

I had these put on a whlie ago, but never took pics. A bird also pooped on my rear!

A sampling of all the crap that's cluttering up my garage that is waiting for springtime to be put on. This is just one wall.

And since I have some room, a coulple of new shots.

Thanks man. The way it sits now, I could have gotten away with a bolt in notch. The axle was real close to the frame. I decided to go with a weld in one because someday, it's going to lay. I actually planned on having it bagged by now, but I'm not home much and don't really have time. I might get it done this summer, but I'm leaving for a year in the fall, and not sure if I want to bag it, then leave it sit that long.
My main priority right now is getting all my new sheetmetal on so I don't have to deal with storing it when I leave.

Re: Diesel does a build

Well, I'm stuck at home with a bad back, so I'll post some pics of some updates I made a couple of weeks ago. I tore my whole dash apart and repainted it. It was looking real crappy. Also put my new Mooneyes steering wheel in and an original AM radio. It isn't hooked up, and not having tunes really sucks, but I love how it looks.

Also repainted the bezel and needles.

Re: Diesel does a build

Brady,
glad I found your build. wow, I didn't know you had slotted and drilled front rotors! those look great!! really dig the fact that you left the "GMC" on the rear window, kind of a tribute to the way she used to be.

and I about crapped my pants when I noticed the bottle opener! I may have to "borrow" that idea.

keep us posted 'cause I am subscribing to ths one!!!!

Re: Diesel does a build

Thanks Doug! I did have to get rid of the old GMC letters in the back, though. They were off center and didn't look right. As you know, I've been pretty busy lately. I'm taking my new bedsides and fenders in tomorrow to have the marker lights filled. Also, my parents sold one of their houses and had to get rid of a bunch of stuff ASAP. One of the items just so happened to be a GM Goddrench 350 with about 40,000 miles on it out of one of my ol man's work vans. I've been bugging him for years to sell it to me. He called me up the other day and told me to come get the damn thing. For free! Original plans were to clean it up, paint it, maybe, just maybe stick a cam in it and put it in the truck. Well, you know haw that goes. It's now sitting in a pile of parts in my garage. I figured I might as well do it right. Going to leave the bottom end stock and the only thing I'm doing to the heads is having them machined to accept my new rockers. Here's how she was when I got home:

This was after Me, Myself, and I with help of a floor jack, two ratchet straps, two blocks of wood, a six pack, and alot of bloodied knuckles got the damn thing on my engine stand without a cherry picker. Funny how all of your buddies are busy and the only local rental place is out of cherry pickers when you need to get a damn engine out of your truck.

Re: Diesel does a build

So this is how she looks now. I'm waiting on a valve spring puller to come in the mail (hopefully tomorrow) so I can pull the valve springs and get the heads to the machine shop.

Here's a little bit of whats going in.

The cam is a Comp Thumpr. If you've never heard one of these, do yourself a favor and get on Youtube and check them out! Combined with the roller rockers, Edelbrock intake, and headers, she should have a little giddy up to her. I have a couple of Holleys laying around, one of them being a Street Avenger that I might throw on, but I'm really getting sick of dealing with them, so I might get a nice 'built' Q-Jet.

Thanks! Yeah, I was going to go with something halfway mild with good torque, but then I heard the Thumpr and had to go with that. I wasn't going to go with the gear drive but my neighbors have been p!ssing me off lately, so they will now get a little dose of Pete Jackson every morning at 5:00

Cool build! That notch is massive, but then again like you said it will lay frame when the time comes.

Re: Diesel does a build

Got a little done this weekend. Lowered the rear 1.5 more inches with Early Classics drop shakles. Now I want it lower in the front!
Before:

After:

If you didn't know I did it, you wouldn't notice, but I'm happy with it. And yes, I have an exuse for my yard looking that crappy. I just overseeded my grass and am waiting for the new stuff to get a little taller before I mow. Just thought I'd throw that in there.
I finally got my new bedsides and new to me fender into the auto skills center here on post to fill my marker lights and some trim holes. The body man tacks em up, you grind em down. Total price for having three marker lights and numerous trim holes filled: $12.48. Can't beat that with a stick. I need to skim coat them this week, and hopefully get them on sometime this week.

I also got my heads back from the machine shop and got my new engine almost buttoned up, but forgot to take pics (sorry guys). Lets just say she looks a lot nicer in some shiny new Cheby Orange I'll try to get some teaser pics tomorow, I promise.

Re: Diesel does a build

Just came in from about 3 hours of Bondo-ing, blocking, sanding, filling, ect. My hat is off to all of you in the body repair buisiness. I could NEVER, EVER do this stuff on a day-to-day basis. I'm ready to haul it all in to a body shop and have it done.

Thanks man. Just got home early this morning from a month long Army sponsored 'vacation' in California, and haven't done anything, much less get her out of storage yet. I might go get her out tomorrow, but if I do I'm just going to cruise the hell out of her. I really need to get my new engine in and all of my body panels on, too. I literally have a garage full of parts that need to be put on within the next month.m Stay tuned.
