Today the Volvo runs much better, I waved the white flag and had a tech

I'll drive it at lunch tomorrow and see what I think. It never died driving it to work last night but might have if I did not play the gas pedal at stops.

Re: Amazon driver

Classic cars can be a pain, trying to find wipers for a 66 Volvo is not a quick deal. But O'Reilly's got it handled tonight. The NAPA wipers looked awful and they did not fit.

Getting the wheels powdercoated "almond" a.k.a. cream to give some contrast to the someday yellow body.

Was going to do up some Ford 15x6 steelies but Mrs.Nonhog likes the factory wheel caps so we will stick with the Volvo wheels.(for now)

As soon as it warms up a bit I will drive the thing back and forth to work for a bit. Not sure how much I trust the heater/defroster right now.

Once its all yellow with almond wheels I may or may not be driving it so much.

I am not a big fan of flat black (way overdone) but in this case I might try and push for it, instead of flat yellow. Black with almond wheels could be good?

here is an idea on the yellow.... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...ighlight=volvo

Re: Amazon driver

Spent some time on the Amazon as gas prices prompted me to get this road worthy. It leaks pretty bad but I was not sure from where.
I figured the windshield seal leaked but it had lots of water in the rear floorboards. So I pulled the roof rack as well as the CB antenna.
Have some rust issues under where the rack mounts are. Wire wheeled them clean then painted with a rust converter paint topped with brushed on DP40.
Epoxy puttied the CB hole. All temporary till I pull the headliner and weld in new pieces.
This week I'll add a skim coat of all metal to fill the rust pits just to get a good seal for the rubber well nuts.

Next up new windshield gasket.

Re: Amazon driver

Ordered a new windshield gasket and figured I'd get ready for it.
Good news/bad news
Good news it is really clean and basically rust free
Bad news I could have waited. And getting the old sealer off the car is a real pain. Beats welding and grinding I suppose.

Re: Amazon driver

Was going to try and just touch up the chipped spots but bagged that idea and almost done cleaning the channel down to bare metal. Yes I'm super slow!
Had my son up for a bit and left the projects to sit and wait. Hes at summer school now and I'm back at it. Decided to get rid of the parts car.
Which is much fun. Started tearing at it heavy and hard on Friday night by Saturday night it was a shell. Only a very few items left before I give it to the scrap hauler. Next back on the winshield install.

Re: Amazon driver

Drove it to work once and a few short trips last year.
Started and ran it last week, ran great still needs a few minor items to be a driver.
No real update just had to add this video.

Thanks for asking FF! I have done very little. I did find the gas tank vent was plugged oddly enough since it was undercoated (new?)
Was doing some weird hot restarts and spilling out the filler cap.
Hope the cap removel fixes that.
I'm ready to put some miles on it but honestly the PNW weather has brought out the wimp in me. Too easy to drive the Silverado(until this morning, just traded it in toward a driver for Mrs. Nonhog since I'm taken so long on her other Volvo project. 5.0 swap)
I'm very torn about future plans for the Amazon. Oone idea would be keep the engine it has and add a 5 or 6 speed that would tame the 4.56 gears.
But its really not my car and the request I have gotten is an ATM tranny.
I question the low torque of the old tractor engine pulling an ATM behind it.
That makes me think Quad 4 Oldsmobile. Also a 60 Degree GM V6. Both would likely fit well. I'm leaning toward the V6. Find a S/C model.

I did move it out in the front thinking if I see it everyday I'll be more apt to work on it.

Re: Amazon driver

The 60V6 would be PERFECT!!! I was looking into them for the Minx before I decided on the F20C. I was seriously considering the 3.6 from the Caddy CTS (non-V). It's also what powers the new six-banger Camaros. All aluminum Torque: 278 ft-lbs. @ 4800 rpm Horsepower: 323 hp @ 6800 rpm, 28mpg in a 3780lb tank, and backed by a 6sp, BOOM!

The main reason I didn't go for it at the time was the lack of aftermarket support. Now that it's in the Camaro I'm sure that's changing fast.

Truthfully, a gear swap is probably the wisest choice

So if it's not your car, who's is it?

I was thinking old school 60degV6 even in stock form they weigh less than the B20 in there now. And have some aftermarket support.
Add a 700r4 from an S10 and everybody is happy.
I'm somewhat intimidated by ECU's wiring and laptops. I know the advantages
but still would be happy with a carb.
Who knows if I ever complete the EFI 5.0 swap maybe I'll be up for a newer
tech engine swap. I'm in no rush.

This car is my wifes. So she calls the shots.

Yeh, the older carbed 60V6's would be fun to do too. Forgot you mentioned who's car it is in the beginning of the thread. I bet a carb conversion comes out for the 3.6 just like the LSX.

Why not keep it all Volvo and find and engine and transmission from a Volvo 850 T5, 222hp five cylinder, was available with a four speed auto and can be tuned to silly numbers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_850

I do think that a 4,5 or 6 Volvo plant would be cool. I also think it could be
very pricey when compared to other engines.
I'm not ruling anything out. For now I have to decide which B20 to freshen up.
I have a Laycock O/D set up out of a parts car but not sure if its worth going through. I think fabbing a Miata 6 speed to the freshened B20 would be fun. See I'm all over the place with this darn thing!

Re: Amazon driver

Absolutely nothing has happened to this car.
(waiting on the V8 swap on the other Volvo)
However I had to share about my boy who is 16 now and soon to be driving. Well he was in the car when we learned how bad the fuel issue was (nearly got creamed pulling into traffic) he hated the car after that. Until I had him drive it the other day.
He is learning to drive a stick. He loved it. "I want to drive this to school!"
"Can I have this for my 1st car? How much?"
I did not see that coming.

Nice! I'd give it to my son/daughter if interested. My 14yo has a 68 VW Squareback and no real interest in it.

Re: Amazon driver

Well it is my wife's car. She did tell me I could race it since I sold my Cutlass.
That would force the engine swap idea.
As usual I am getting ahead of myself.
My wife (his step mom) says no classic cars for the 1st year of driving. Have to have airbags! Yes dear.

Look at his face and imagine the comments.
"Reverse is where?" "Why?"
"It only has 4 gears, as in no 5th gear?"

Well the possibility of a flip/flop is real as my situation proves. Plus you have a really cool Minx that should be a driver in the near future that could be a big influence!

Re: Amazon driver

Well Jr. still likes the Amazon. So I charged the battery and pulled it out of hibernation. Told him he could drive it to tennis practice since I bought tabs for it. Then the ignition switch seized up. Had to pull the battery cable as it was stuck in the 'on' position. Headed over to the local auto parts store to see if they had a switch I could make do. It already has a universal switch as the originals don't last forever. So I tell Jr. to tell the man what you want
.
Of course he asks year/model. Before I could interject, they start down that path. I wait a moment and tell the guy you wont have it I just need a universal one as that is what in there now. He nods then says "I'm sorry, we don't have one". I'm about to leave and he says but we do have an aftermarket one over here. On the package it says 'universal'.
Had to share that story after the General Discussion thread the other day.
$9.99 later we head on our way to install the new (cheapo) switch.
Pounded most of the dents flat from P.O. where the dash hole is.

Not sure where this car will head. Might just give it to Jr. since I can't afford the 69 Camaro he really wants. Something Mrs. Nonhog and I have discussed. See how Tennis practice goes tomorrow. With the Amazon!
