Vintage Air & 72 Rear Air

Guys, I finally got my A/C installed and charged. I used a Vintage Air Surefit Gen VI in the front with electronic controls conversion, and the original factory rear unit. I did every thing my self except oil, vacuum, and charge, which I had a professional shop do, as well as double check all my work.

So far I am extremely pleased with the cooling results. My AC guys says he measured 50 degree air coming out the front and rear. I have driven it twice by myself for about 20 minutes each time on roughly 84 degree days here in Anaheim this past weekend. I had to turn the front and rear down to medium, as it was getting too cold! No tint anywhere and just factory light green glass. I've also got carpet, padding, and fatmat knock-off on the floors, and the fatmat on all the sides, doors, and on the roof.

I'm looking forward to the next heat wave here in Socal so I can test it at +/- 100 degrees and see if it handles it! I also nee to get somebody to ride in the back and see what they say. Also nee to finish installing the rear shroud/cover

I am very curious about retro fit AC in burbs like ours, since the heat here in SoCal where I live tends to hover around 100 degrees. Which tends to dictate how long I comfortably cruise my old burb around, which also bugs me since I do enjoy driving the old girl around with my dog. But when it gets really hot, my dog starts to become uncomfortable and I begin to head home to cool off.

Keep us updated on this please, since this is something I would want to do to my burb if it is worth it.

Glad to see the R4 compressor has enough displacement to keep the Burb cool. It was the the OEM compressor for so many years; I guess it would. Interesting hose adapter on the R4. I'm not sure I've seen that one.

Is your rear unit isolated by mounts? It looks to have rubber washers. I know mine is bolted tight. Did you extend the wiring. It looks longer and neater.

I was getting a bit of a vibration on the rear unit on Medium speed so I thought I'd try some rubber washers to try and act as isolators. Seems to have helped/worked. Wiring wise, ya, I rewired the entire Burb, including the rear AC.

Nice. I'm installing a Gen IV in mine without rear. We'll see....Not to change the thread, but what did you use for that black headliner and strips? Looks good.

Those strips are the original dried, brittle, and rusty bows that I painted black. I wish somebody would re-pop these. It took 2 set of bows to make one decent set with no chips or cracks.

Any chance we could get some specific info on wiring and hose routing for the rear? I just finished the GEN IV install in my 72, along with a complete painless wiring harness and over the winter, Im looking to incorporate the factory rear system. Thanks very much!

I know my OEM wiring for the rear enters at the top of the drivers kick panel then up the A pillar. It travels down the drivers side roof to the back.

The A/C hoses start down the passenger side, cross over to the drivers side under the front seat area. The hoses then enter into the passenger compartment where the fourth door would be, follow the quarter panel, go up the D pillar and exit through a couple overlapping holes near the roof line.

The pair of hoses are held to the body with clamps bolted the floor boards.
