Power Steering Problem 72 GMC

Well folks seems every day I get a bit dumber.

I have a PS set up for my 72 GMC. Box, pittman arm, pump small water pump brackets, new hoses, pulleys. So today I decide to see how much of a problem I will have.

So I decide to bolt up the power steering pump and bracket and pulleys and start looking at alignment etc.

Tried to bolt up the cradle for the PS Pump and top bolt is fine, bottom off 1/2 inch or so from the hole due to it banging the balancer. Put a measure on the balancer and the diameter is eight inches. So I would guess my brackets are wrong? or should I go to a six inch balancer?

Any ideas?

Here is a pic of brackets and the bracket hitting balancer:

Re: Power Steering Problem 72 GMC

Brackets in picture came off a 327 motor. Thinking they are different for a 350 due to balancer size?

Re: Power Steering Problem 72 GMC

I had a similar problem on my 65 SS which has the same PS bracket as yours. When I installed the 400 SBC with an 8" diameter damper I ended up grinding the bracket just enough for clearance as it looked like the bracket would be strong enough after I removed the material. I reworked the bracket in 1993 and the car has been driven on a regular basis during the summer since then without any problems.

This may not be the best solution but it works for me and no one ever notices the bracket at the many car shows the car is entered into.
