Wiring 24V winch

How do I hookup a 24V winch in my son's truck? We were wanting to install a deep cell battery for winching with a splitter to charge as needed but I guess I need to run both batteries in series to get 24V and wondered if there is a switch to handle that.

Re: Wiring 24V winch

I should have stated series/parallel switch...sorry. I know there is something like that just not sure where to get. Maybe some of the guys that drove wreckers might know of them?

Re: Wiring 24V winch

Do you know how much current the 24 V motor uses? Perhaps there is a number of watts or amps stamped on the motor? There are 12V to 24V step up converters available, but I don't know if they would handle the load.

There are 12V winches, perhaps get one of those instead of trying to use a 24V one? It would seem to simplify things.

Re: Wiring 24V winch

it'd probably be cheaper to buy a new 12v winch than to setup a truck for 2 voltages
not sure how your alternator would handle charging two different type batteries either
keep the batteries the same type and AH

you'd need a modified version of this diagram; minus 1 battery and 1 solenoid

Re: Wiring 24V winch

Turns out I did something wrong when I tested the motor or at least the lady I talked to on the phone seemed to think when she cross referenced the motor for me. She said the motor SHOULD be a 12V but it tested 24V and lots of Google searches I did came up 24V as well but at this point it may not make a difference because...

After closer examination it turns out the winch housing is broken on the end cap opposite from the the "gear" side so unless I can find someone with an end housing on an old winch it's probably game over anyway.

The end housing cap has triangular a piece cracked through to the bolt hole in two places plus another an inch away running through the middle of the mounting pad and almost identical ( not quite as bad) on the opposite side with a linear crack through the middle of the mounting pad as well as through the mounting bolt hole as well.

I'll try to repair that and if that works use helicoils just to see what happens but when we figured new cable & motor the cost is just too high. I'm thinking it would be a better investment to get a new winch.

So, if someone out the has an old Viking winch and wants to part it out let me know and if anyone needs parts I might have'em. I'll ask over on the 4x4 section.

Thanks for all the help.
