Nice work though!
Charles, fwiw I ALWAYS fill my own truck AND Camaro no matter which gas station I go to. I've never once had someone not allow me- even when I had crappy paint on my 67. I've heard that there might be a provision for classics, but I've never bothered looking that up to be certain. If your truck is nice, I'd be really surprised if someone said "no dice" and wouldn't allow you to fill yourself.

Re: My side marker light fuel filler idea

Here is what I first did, and what I ended up doing when running into problems with the filler at the gas station. I used a Chevy S-10 door/hinge and fabbed it to my rear marker. I also retained the rear mounting tab, allowing me to use the factory screw to secure it tight. You just have to remember to have a small screwdriver (or pocketknife) on hand to open it I ended up using a Blazer filler neck and inside cover when I went to the gas station and could not get the filler in there. I cut out a 2" diameter hole on the inside, and flipped the filler around, and used a 60-66 gasket (perfect fit) to hold/seal it all in place.

Again, if you do not have large rubber boots on the fillers at your gas station, Rob's method is the way to go.

Re: My side marker light fuel filler idea

I like the way you put it inside, the side post like that. Ive never saw it that way. Ive been debating on how to do and was leaning toward the side marker fill, but theres no "filling issues" when you do it your way. Ive never been a fan of filling it up in the bed floor.

What? Man I learned soemthing today. Same thing in New Jersey... been that way since 1949!

The following is taken directly from the text of ORS 480.330:
"An owner, operator or employee of a filling station service station, garage, or other dispensary where class 1 flammable liquids are dispensed at retail may not permit any person other than the owner, operator or employee to use or manipulate any pump, hose, pipe or other device for dispensing the liquids into the fuel tank of a motor vehicle or other retail container."

Good to know Brad. I never had a problem when I was on my bike but it seems like they like to tell me that its against the law in oregon and then wont let me do it myself in my truck. My local station don't care but I just don't want to take any chances. You will see my truck whenever you stop by and you'll see why I am so worried. LOL.

I will have check into that law though.

Re: My side marker light fuel filler idea

I was taking a car to Sun Valley a couple months ago and stopped at a station in the top right corner of Oregon and wasn't thinking and got out a grabbed the nozzle and was about tackled by the attendant and was chewed out big he said he could shut down and i could be fined??
Oregon is a little weird!

Re: My side marker light fuel filler idea

yeah I agree. There is good and bad about this law. Prices arn't really any more even though there is obviously more overhead when they have to pay labor to tend to the pumps.

Sometimes I like it when your cleaned up and on your way somewhere you dont have to worry about getting there smelling like gas. But, when you have something nice you dont want some flunky banging the thing against your ride and then just saying.. Oh sorry.. or spillage.. this is always an issue when we get gas in the wifes 78 with beside fillers they fill slow and it seems like they are going to shove the nozzle through the bed trying to get it to stay in.. They get pissed when you tell them it fills slow and you have to hold it or it will fall out... makes you wonder.... haven't they ever filled a mid 70's chevy before? there is only 5 million of them!

Mine is not fancy but is out of the way and low enough that I don't have to mess with the bed cover... plus I have no sidemarkers

Re: My side marker light fuel filler idea

If I were to do this to a stepside it would but the filler neck/cap at a much better angle right? Since the step allows for ~1 ft of space, I could technically get it to set close to parallel to the side marker right? Meaning no sharp angles.

Nice work though!
Yea I think the trick is to hide it so they have to look for it when I pull up! Then when they ask " where" just say "Ill DO IT" works a lot with my Camaro Don't underestimate the "stink eye" or phrases like "that paint cost more then you made last year" cause everyone’s afraid of being sued.
It is nice when it is cold or raining though not to get out of the car.

Great mod I like it.

Anyone ever used a rear tank and plumed it to the stock filler location with a non-venting cap?

Re: My side marker light fuel filler idea

I'm thinking about using this idea on my '68 Stepside. Any thoughts on how this would change the installation?

Between this thread and Shawn's thread you should get a good idea on how to get it done.

Re: My side marker light fuel filler idea

i hate to keep bumping up old threads, but im stuck in California with the big nozzles. I would really like to use the marker light fill and no have to cut into the bed at all.

So do you think using one of these credit card looking things will hold back the nozzle and let me angle into the marine cap?

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=647816

thanks guys!

Looks like it will work. Pull your marker light and test it out.
