1 barrel carb choke

The choke cable on my truck would not pull out.The cable was routed through the wrong hole in the firewall and it was kinked. I cleaned and rerouted the cable it pulls freely now.

When i disconnected it from the carb the choke butterfly was tie wired in the opened position.
I cut the tie wire and hooked the choke cable to the carb. Wahla I can now use the choke to warm up the truck in the mornings.

The problem now is when I push the choke in the truck dies. For now I have to leave the choke pulled out a little to keep it running.

Is there a fix for this.

Re: 1 barrel carb choke

I had a very similar issue on mine late last year. If the choke was not out half or more, it just would not run right. It would die out at stops and just wouldn't seem to want to run very well once it did get going. The problem was solved with adjustment to the timing.

Re: 1 barrel carb choke

The way it was wired open might of been letting the idle be set by the fast idle cam. May try just turning up the idle screw a bit.

Re: 1 barrel carb choke

Napa sells a carb kit for them pretty cheap which come with a new accelerator pump plunger. You could also check that the exhaust manifold flapper thing is working like it should.

Re: 1 barrel carb choke

Just a follow up.
The choke is working great. The gas pedal needs to be stepped on to engage and disengage the choke.
Jimmy you were right on. I turned up the idle screw and all is good.
The beast is now idling about 700 rpm.
