How common is the 402 in a C10

I don't see it alot or hear it discussed much. Anyone know production numbers for the RPO code L47 in a '71 C10? Thanks.

Fairly common, not sure they have an exact number, but i know i've seen this question answered before here.

BTW, does your engine make a slight "ticking" noise???? LOL

Good one. I don't know how common it is but you got to love a big block. I got a 72 3/4 ton super with a 402. I really enjoy the truck.

Yea, I'm just started a four wheel disc brake conversion. I figured I could nickel and dime my way thru the disc/drum or oust step up to modern tech and getter done right once, the first time. It was my dads truck until he passed away in 2010 of a farming accident. I got it from my mom so it wouldn't get sold or end up in my other siblings possession. I really cant wait to get the 2 1/2 front (undetermined rear) drop and brake job done so I can get it back on the road. I had to quit driving it when I realized it didn't stop.
Wouldn't have been good to pile up because of bad brakes.

I was under the impression that factory BB were not that common and a low percentage were bought with the 402BB. I have data back home that I will need to check. Others?

The big block was not as common as you would think. I would guess it probably added 200 bucks to the price of the truck[purely guessing]and gas wasn't an issue it probably was advertised at 8mpg when the 350 would do somewhat better than that[not by much] you can NOT beat the cool factor of a big block

I remember looking it up years ago and a percentage is the best you'll find. I think factory AC had a lower percentage of production than a big block. Nice looking truck, enjoy that 402!

I've learned this little nugget of information. The most desirable BB's were built in the Tonawanda, NY forge. They have the highest percentage of nickle along with other alloys which make them stronger than other blocks cast at other GM forges. Great for racing engines.

I believe they are somewhat rare in a 1/2 ton and extremely rare in a 1/2 ton shortbed. Add in A/C and buckets and you've got something special , and don't forget the special paint!

No, He bought it on a return trip from Fla after he cleaned his folks place out after they passed. Saw it on the side of the road, stopped and bought it. Drove all the way to Michigan to empty his stuff then turned around and drove back to Fla and picked the truck up and trailered it back to Mi. Back in the day he was a driving fool. We used to run horses all over the U.S. in the 80's before I went in the Navy then with whomever he could shanghai after that into the late 90's.

So let me get this straight - an L47 on the SPID indicates its a 402 BB? Mine says L47 396, so I assumed it was really a 396. My engine looks just like ToddT's (nice truck Todd!) photo.

No SPIDS listed a 402, just 396 or 400. Both incorrect.
It is a 30 over 396...402 cubes.
Lots of good threads in here about why, very interesting stuff.
Also no 402 badges were ever made.

But its an interesting little twist with these old trucks.

Has something to do with a fed mandate about no engines greater than 400cid so GM badged them all 400.

396/400/402 I don't care, that is one special truck. Not only was it your dads and now yours but it was a hell for loaded short bed when it was sold new and was most likely special ordered from the factory. The hard core restore it to showroom brigade will have a fit when you modify it though as that one is probably considered a prize to restore to showroom stock.

I don't intend to do much modifying to it. The exhaust is in tough shape, (owner before my dad did a hack job) and I want to remedy that with some stainless so its out of my way for good and I may down the road wake the engine up with an Edelbrock top end or similar. Whatever I do to it I will keep and preserve the original parts though.
