1970 Inner Grill Color Question

The inner grill on my 70 CST has been painted all silver by the previous owner. Would the correct color be all black except for the front edges of the egg crate? I know the vertical recess sections would be painted black. What would be the correct color of black?

Thanks,
Frank

I've asked this before too, and it seems like the general consensus, is that they came stock sort of a dark greenish gray. At least on a 69, which is the closest you can get to a 70. They are plastic, and fade, so it's hard to really tell what they were like 40 years ago, and old photos probably won't be accurate either. I said screw it, and painted it black

Here's the before shot, and then the during and after shots

Re: 1970 Inner Grill Color Question

I think the 69 & 70 inner Grilles were black. I'll let other chime in.

Re: 1970 Inner Grill Color Question

I recently asked about the 69 grill color and it seems it was not black but actually gray in color.

I'm still undecided what shade of gray I need for my 69 wrecker project. The original grill is good but appears to be weathered gray just like the first pic in Mister-B's post.

Would love to hear the exact shade if anyone knows.

Edit: just found an old pic of mine:

Re: 1970 Inner Grill Color Question

I purchased this inner and outer grill from a local Chevy dealer in 1990. I am told it is the correct one for 1970.

Hope it helps.

I believe they told you wrong about that inner piece with the crate pattern. In 70, they moved to the horizontal slats like you see in the green truck above. You've got a 69 grill and insert, but I believe your headlight trim should be black and not chrome.

I just realized something, based off Combat72's latest post. Check out this pic

According to that, the only thing that changed between 69 and 70, with the plastic grate behind, is how they painted it! If that's true, they DID sell you a 70 piece, but if you want it to look like a '70 piece, you would need to paint it differently
