Bed Mat In or Out?

What is the best? To have a rubber mat in the bed or not? Any feed back on this?

Unless you haul a lot of stuff that would dent the bed, I think the risk of trapping moisture and getting rust would be greater

If its the rubber type, I like mine alot. Things are not sliding around the bed and scratching it up.When it gets dirty I take it out and wash the bed.

after the bed has been coated and you need a softer bottom floor for hauling something sure, but not a rubber mat on painted metal, it will rot fast.

same reason you don't tarp a car/truck when sitting

Re: Bed Mat In or Out?

When I had my '71, it had a bed mat. It was in there for more than 8 years, and I never had any "rot" issues. Every couple of months I would take it out and wash underneath it....even throw the mat back in while it was wet.

This is what I use. It's a 4' X 6' Commercial door mat. $30 at home depot.

Re: Bed Mat In or Out?

Thats the key, but most people get lazyand just leave it in, grit n crap gets under it, road vibrations use it to start to sand through the paint, and rust gets a foot hold.

Nothing wrong with a bed mat. Just make sure that you get one with the bumps on the bottom side. This lets air get under it keeps it dry so it doesn't rust.

I bought this one from Jegs, designed for a '73 long bed:

Dee Zee #86642

The openings around the wheel wells are a bit longer than necessary for my '70, but otherwise it fits perfectly.

I use bed mats for one reason - to keep things from sliding around.
