Probably couldn't start a family in it, either....

Re: Pic Thread: Cool Old Cars
Looking at all the Lotus cars I know of, I think Lotus didn't want people to have families . If it meant handle cornering faster and easier Lotus did it. They built go carts with registration plates

And it says the car turned the fastest lap of the weekend at that 2016 autocross event with a little ol AMC 360. Not shabby at all.

Re: Pic Thread: Cool Old Cars
The Avanti was cool too . 4 seater sports car to bad GM interfered with it. White with black interior I sold in 2017 . The one with the red I still own

Re: Pic Thread: Cool Old Cars
I remember liking those when they came out. Quite a car! What's the story on GM interfering?
Studebaker was building a sleek and sporty car with a back seat in the '50s

Re: Pic Thread: Cool Old Cars
Both the Corvette and Avanti bodies were being built by MFG . As orders for the Avanti grew GM demanded MFG to only build the Corvettes or they would break their contract. Of course MFG agreed . So the production of the Avanti was halted so that body production could be moved to South Bend in a Studebaker plant. Causing massive delays in delivery so many orders were cancelled by customers .
Unbeknownst to GM was that MFG "loaned" the personal that were building the bodies to Studebaker. And the bodies were much better quality than the Corvette since they were basically hand built with thicker panels

So the Avanti was fiberglass? If so I learned something new.

Re: Pic Thread: Cool Old Cars
Thanks, according to my father, "you need to learn something new everyday". So, on that note, you have taught me several new things today. I'm done for the day. Thanks for the information. It's very interesting.

Re: Pic Thread: Cool Old Cars
So you are all caught up.
If I'm not mistaken the Keiser Darrin was the first production fiberglass bodied car in US. Next came the Corvette and then the Avanti. Any others?

I was just thinking that our old VW Bug was a cool old car because the heater didn't work very well

Re: Pic Thread: Cool Old Cars
I had a '40 Chevy coupe that had a cooling system leak, back in '75. I was living in a small town called Gooding, in Idaho, and went on a date in Twin Falls. I was freezing everything off, because it turned out that some of the Bar's Leaks had solidified in a heater hose fitting, basically closing off the heater core. It wouldn't have been so bad, if it hadn't been February. I'm amazed that I didn't have frostbite, TBH.

Re: Pic Thread: Cool Old Cars
Stories of VWs and weak heat remind me of my first car. It was a Manx style dune buggy. We built it in our home garage. A chrome dual cannon exhaust was more important than a heater to this 16 year old so it had no heater at all. And I drove it year round for years. I got caught out in a sleet storm a time or two and drove with my head peeking out around the windshield. Played in the snow and had a blast. I kept that car about 7 years. I'd do it all over again if I could.

I drove a '66 VW Bus across the great Basin, Granby,CO to SF,CA mid-winter and still remember my toes nearing frostbite. And I was wearing my best mountaineering clothes! Just a piece of sheet metal between my feet and the headwind. * Heater boxes . You could touch them with your bare hand and that was way back there before the air oozed it's way forward. They worked pretty good in the summertime! I always wondered how they got heat out of the Corvair. My did had a '64 and I don't remember that being so cold

Re: Pic Thread: Cool Old Cars
Naw, fiberglass dune buggy bodies were a shell only, no provisions for heat. They were intended for summer time play. The VWs heater channels, as you know, were part of the VW body to carry heat forward. Luke warm at best. Those Germans were a hearty bunch operating air cooled cars up in those mountain temps.
That's a good lookin 'vair. The 6 cylinders created more heat than the VW 4 so their heaters may have worked a skosh better.

Re: Pic Thread: Cool Old Cars
Corvairs have a fan and everything! They even have a place on the dashboard for heat controls. The VW didn't even have any heat controls to look at
