Bumpers

How wide vs body width does a bumper have to be for legality.

I am fabbing a front bumper for my Willy's which is 6 foot wide at the body. Would a 40" front bumper be alright or for legal reasons does it need to be full sized?

Re: Bumpers

^^^ x2. Here in MD a bumper is to be as wide as the body. I've made bumpers that were less and never got hassled. Our law also says a wheel opening must cover 180 degrees of the wheel. How can that work on a Willys or even brand new Jeeps? When lift lits were new I got pulled over for that. Went to court and told the judge if he went to any new car dealership he would not be able to find a single pickup truck that had the body in line or lower than the wheel center. I think 16" short from edge of body sounds like asking for trouble. I've built them within 6" at each end

Re: Bumpers

I scanned through Virginia code, and find no mention of bumper width. They do specify bumper height off the ground, but I think that's commonly violated without consequence.

Re: Bumpers

Got the front bumper mounted today temporary heavy tack welds. I need to measure a few things, and decide if I want to change it before I go further.

I am thinking I will widen the bumper 6" a side perpendicular to the frame. The bumper has a V to match the Willy's nose.

Re: Bumpers

I work for Warn Industries and we offer stubby bumpers for Jeeps, they are just a tad wider then the Jeep frames. These are popular because you have a better approach angle in front of the tires. We have offered these for a few years, I have never heard of any legal issues.
