Custom carbon fiber parts

Ive been dabbling in custom fiberglass and carbon fiber work as a hobby for awhile now.Im starting a one off gauge cluster made from white and black carbon fiber fabric and a glass center console and wanted to put out a feeler thread to see if thered be any intrest in this type of work? If theres enough intrest id like to become a vendor...So if anyone is intrested what parts would you want?

Re: Custom carbon fiber parts

Well, personally I don`t get the whole excitement over carbon fiber and it seems to be a ricer thing. They get all worked up over it.I don`t think of it as having any purpose on a heavy vehicle where it won`t make any difference.I`d think fiberglass would be cheaper and do just fine for most stuff.I would paint it because I don`t want "the look".

Re: Custom carbon fiber parts

A gauge bezel to fit custom gauges
kick panels for speaker
a box that goes under the dash to fit a aftermarket stereo maybe that will go from the bottom of the dash to the carpet and be able to mount a speaker on each side

even if people dont like the carbon fiber they can always pait or wrap with vinyl or leather if you do become a vender and make any of these send me a pm

Re: Custom carbon fiber parts

I would think glovebox, dorr trim panl to cover the metal inserts, cowl panels, hoods, tailgates, roll pans front and rear. It would be very nice to be able to take some weight off these bucket specially for those of us that like to go fast

I like the aftermarket radio bow w/speakers in the side like ORANGESI said. What do you think the cost would be on something like that. I like my trucks original, but I would like to have some tunes too.

Re: Custom carbon fiber parts

I have seen fiberglass painted to look like carbon fiber. Some crotch rocket motorcycle parts are that way.

Re: Custom carbon fiber parts

you can paint, upholster / cover the carbon fiber parts just like fiberglass parts (think Rod Doors) OR leave it natural (think ricer) ... just more options I suppose.

the dash pad wouldn`t be a "pad",but a smoothing piece for a custom touch.

Re: Custom carbon fiber parts

I was attempting Carbon body panels.

Where I worked we had two auto-claves to cure pre-preg carbon fiber.

This stuff is very expensive(pre-preg anyway). About $25 a square foot.

I saw some wheels that were hand over-laid and looked really good. Takes 3 weeks to do one wheel though. We were looking to speed up the process using pre-preg. Can be seen here under 3 Piece Colection, CF Forged Series.

Hand laid carbon takes a long time to produce, that has to get factored into the price.

To answer the question though.

upper radiator mount (like trans dapt) or other under hood items.

I am in the process of doing inner wheel wells.

Re: ricer?

If you have looked at any nitro or Pro/Modified lately, there is nothing "ricer" about carbon fiber.

Here is some of the carbon fiber stuff I have fabricated on my '70.

It all started with the so called "ricer" mirror I fabricated onto the side window vent...

Re: Custom carbon fiber parts

God that's 'ricer' Why?

Kidding, I am a fan of carbon, obviously.

diggertodd - Is that all hand laid, looks good!!

Can't see any pulling or stretching and seems pretty flat.

Re: Custom carbon fiber parts

If you look in the bottom right corner - fabricated a carbon fiber radiator support by epoxy sandwiching real carbon fiber panel over an aluminum panel.

similar to heavt71, I am dabbling in "skunkworking" some carbon fiber parts new, will go the cheap route by using fiberglass for the first 2 layers and a final carbon fiber outer layer with lots of resin and wet-sanding.

Re: Custom carbon fiber parts

pre-made flat panels, you can buy in 2x4' to 4x8 sheets. A close friend builds Super Comp to Pro/Modified race cars. I get his scraps!!!!

When it comes to panel carbon fiber, there is very cheap and good, Cynergy composites stuff is durable, doesn't fade and you can actually "tweak" it up to 25-30 degrees on a sheet metal brake without hurting carbon or the resin.
