Rotting vibration dampener! - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

So what do you do with the rotting vibration dampening material between the hood skin and support ribs? This stuff was installed with some kind of black goo and now it is crumbling and falling out. I am sanding the underside of the hood in preparation for a new paint job. How do you get this stuff out and what do you replace it with?

You can buy the replacement sponge rubber from the vendors. I think most of them handle it, but for sure LMC. I use mineral spirits and elbow grease to remove the old adhesive and rubber.

The PO of my truck used canned foam isulation

Not sure how I'm gonna get that out when I go to paint the truck in the future.

Thanks guys, I was not sure if I should even be concerned about it but I hate to just leave it. I really hate to glue an ugly mass back in there...I might try a thicker closed cell foam that will not show under the support but still provide the needed support.

You mena there is supposed to be something in there!!!????
J/K...I knew that. There is actually a little bit of remains in the hood of the GMC.
I know it had all burned away in a carb fire on the first longhorn.
Carb fires suck.

Mine were COMPLETELY gone...I just got some new ones from Rick's Pickup Parts and shoved 'em in, heh. Not quite lined up but not glued either, they fit just fine...

Dynamat! I'd use some xtreme plus hoodliner (or the generic equivalent).

I got a new one from a machinist for 140 bucks. He said it was made in Australia. I wouldn't f^ck around with just glueing back together an old one. It could come off while underway and either blow thru the radiator or cut into the timing cover.
