Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Found this one last week for sale, YES, I'm trying to buy it. However, seat is not plaid anymore, tilt column replaced, most A/C pieces gone, parchment door panels painted black along with the rest of the blue on the inside. All fixable. Owner has no idea it's a Highlander though.....tee hee. Bottom trim is woodgrain. I seem to recall something in the last 13 pages about that but don't remember what the deal is with black/woodgrain. Was it just up to the buyer which one they got? And it's got the ultra rare Cargo Lamp.......lol. I'd already have it but no where to keep it or park it......out of space and can't find a rental garage around here. But I'm working on that (and the missus!). Seen a lot of Medium Blue on here, no Dark Blue......unless I missed it.

A quick request to those of you that post CL/ebay URLs, please include pics from that post since the posts usually disappear quickly and those of us late to the game don't get to see whatever was in the ad. Thanks!!

Sometimes people forget or can't. So feel free to help them out by posting a quote and two or three of the best pictures (especially the SPID).

Too true the interiors are a specifc and often acquired taste!
But its always nice to have new converts to the Highlander clan extending the search and spreading the word.

Loks like someone removed all the Highlander pieces including the DG4, nice chrome 5 x 7 below eye line mirrors. As you say, it could be brought back.

To most people being a Highlander is of no added value and I am sure many second owners saw it as a way to knock the price down when they bought it. The countless number of "Hidden Highlanders" just shows it wasn't popular.

This truck does look to have been a very nice example in Dark Blue/White/Blue Plaid which you don't see very often anymore.
Going to take a fair amount of work (plus $$$$) to bring it back if it needs a full interior repaint and all the trim too. The A/C and tilt alone are huge expenses to correct to factory new.

With the 70 mirrors I'd check closely for 72 doors still being on the truck!

The woodgrain is a variable and something that will take a lot more research if I can find the time. As I said before just go with what is original on the truck and you should be good. However it would not have been a customer selectable option. Plus even with woograined body side moldings the truck did not get the tailgate band! Just the upper and lower tailgate moldings. In cases like this Deluxe Two-Tone the letters were the body color.

Paying to store a project or even a driver is a hard decision. If its just space thats one thing, but spending project money to store a project is often a costly mistake.

So...with the black moldings (looks like mine were), you just got the plain tailgate (no moldings, just the big stamped letters in main body color)? That's what mine has.

Not exactly. Any Custom Deluxe/Highlander with bodyside moldings should have the upper and lower tailgate moldings. That applies to upper alone, lower alone or both.

The letters will generally be white on solid, conventional two-tone (white roof only) or custom two-tone trucks (colored roof only).

On deluxe two-tone trucks (like yours) with a 4xx series paint code will have body color letters showing through the white painted band on the taillgate.

Some Highlanders have woodgrained lower moldings and some are black. Either way does not change the tailgate treatment. Its still painted with both moldings on a molding equipped pickup truck.

A buddy of mine who is heavily into new German car stuff (ie: Silver Potato City) always laughs at the highlander interior of my truck. He thinks that plaid, '70's thing is really tacky and laughable.
As a result, when I get around to redoing my interior (Highlander bench seat) I'm going to order a bunch of extra highlander material and have a pair of slacks and a suit jacket made up to go with the truck....that will 'fix his wagon' and show him who has style around here....lol. (Oh yeah....plus pick up a pair of white dress shoes and a Johnny Miller sport shirt to go with that outfit...lol)
All Good

I seem to remember German cars with plaid trim...
Not sure about a suit, thinking maybe a tonneau cover or a throw blanket would be enough "in the face" plaid.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

The trim code 618 (orange plaid) makes it a "Highlander".
YG8 indicates it is a Promo Package "C" truck that included the "Highlander" trim upgrade as part of the savings package.

I think with exception of the colour that is your kind of truck Tim. One question on this truck, I see it has a BB ( on the spid ) and I thought you couldn't get a BB in a 4 x 4. Is it because is a K30 the BB was available?

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

The model number CE31034 and the VIN clearly show it to be a factory 4x2 C30 V8 truck.

GM did not offer factory 4x4 C30-C3500 trucks during the 67-72 production years. In fact the first named K30-K3500s were offered for the 77MY.

All too often people are quick to claim a converted truck as a K30 when in fact there were none.

So any true 4x4 C30 you see is going to be a conversion either period or later.

As such the trucks will often not be optioned to the 67-72 factory K series convention. Big Blocks and TH400 transmissions come to mind.

An interesting example is the 70 CST/30 NAPCO that can be seen here.
