suburbans are cooler than station wagons!

I love my burb, I was sitting at a stop light today and this sweet 68 olds wagon rolled up next to me.... light blue, looked mostly stock except with ralleys and dual exhaust....but I was glad to be in my burb. I had a thing for wagons, the burb finally broke the curse
Before the burb I almost bought a 64 f%rd falcon wagon with a 351 and 5 speed stick but all stock otherwise....
what do you guys think about station wagons?

just got her out from the paint shop heres some pics.... just copies from thisthread

here ya go...

Re: suburbans are cooler than station wagons!

well....i wouldn't say all wagons....

the 57 nomad comes to mind. my dad bought his 72 burb 27 years ago when i was 3 years old and he is now on his third (an 87 2wd) so burbs are in my blood. i bought my 72 burb 3/4 ton last year partly to relive my childhood and i wanted my own tow rig.

but i do love wagons. my current daily driver is a hand me down 97 merc sable wagon with 204,000 miles on the clock that my mom drove for a good ten years. and my first car was an 86 dodge aries wagon with all the extras which was the family car for nearly a decade prior to getting the sable. my parents have an 01 taurus wagon now. as for the aries.....it needs a full resto and i have plans to turn it into a sleeper tuner car (2.5 T1 upgraded with daytona 2.2 T2 garret/intercooler, 3" exhaust, spirit r/t 11" 4 wheel disc brakes w/ braided hoses, daytona shelby chassis pieces, poly chassis and engine mounts, aluminum strut brace for a daytona, etc, newer auto with peloquin lsd, etc).

Re: suburbans are cooler than station wagons!

yeah....with the Aries it is all plug and play because everything else was based off of it. there are a few vendors that cater to the old school fwd turbo dodge crowd and not just the srt-4 guys and the parts rival some of the outrageous stuff you can get for the imports. i spent a lot of time on the forums for those cars before i bought my burb.

i am not the first to hotrod an aries wagon nor will mine be the fastest, but it will definitely move and will certainly be an economical alternative to the burb unless i'm hauling something heavy. i want to take the car with me to go to bike week in florida and south dakota in the years ahead

i also have a 72 honda cb350 that i plan to haul on the back of my burb eventually when i go to car shows (aluminum carrier). even that has a custom high dollar electronic ignition upgrade and some cylinder head work when i had the top end rebuilt. it was previously owned by my dad and a couple of his buddies.

my other favorite wagons would include the '59 caddy ambulance like in ghostbusters and all those old woodies from the 50's and before. worn out and in serious need of a revitalization (like all my projects) that sable is awesome. yeah, you could get a magnum wagon or some other cool car but you just can't beat 30+mpg, a smooth quiet ride, a cavernous cargo area and seating for 8. the "sport utility vehicle" moniker is just a modern term for truck based station wagons. now they have vehicles that blur the line. but the burb will always be king in my world!

Re: suburbans are cooler than station wagons!

I would much rather have a burb than a station wagon when you are talking wagons of the same era. But when you get down to 1960 and older I would take almost any wagon hands down over a 67-72 burb.

When I was a teen (70's) Falcons and Comets were the dork cars. The only people that drove them were total dorks or the daughters of parents that owned them. Funny how time changes things. I have seen some pretty nicely done Falcon and Comet wagons and sedans. Seen some nice Edsels too lol.

Love the way your paint turned out on the burb. Gonna be hard to top that ride. Its going to hold its own against any year car or truck its next to....Nice job!

Thank you very much!

Yes, the 63 and older wagons are just plain classy.... there is no way around that. The falcon wagon caught my eye because:
1. it didn't look like a f%RD..
2. IT Didn't act like a f%rd..
3. the lines of the car were wayyyy different on the 64

Re: suburbans are cooler than station wagons!

I've always had a thing for wagons... My next project is a 52 willys wagon. I'd love to have a nomad or a 65 chevelle two-door wagon. A nineties Olds/Buick/ Caprice wagon would be cool to have and I certainly wouldnt pass on the opportunity to own a 67-72 Vista Cruiser or skylark...
When my kids were small, I built a 72 chevelle wagon for my wife
To me, a burb IS a station wagon.... SUPERSIZED!

Re: suburbans are cooler than station wagons!

Paint job looks great... didn't you just get this burb not too long ago (thought I recall seeing that post). Good job...looks nice! My daily driver is an '89 mercedes 300TE wagon... I've had it for about 13 years, it now has over 213,000 miles and still rides/looks good. But, nothing beats the burb... we just did a road trip this last weekend and had it loaded with anything from a baby swing, kids, and toys for the lake and all our gear.

Re: suburbans are cooler than station wagons!

I love burbs and wagons. Almost bought a '68 baby blue 454 burb with air bags and 20's, but alas. Mom said I needed a pickup. One day i'll build a '70 gsx clone wagon if I have chillins

Re: suburbans are cooler than station wagons!

unless it is like a refrigerator or something tall, you can put it in the back of a burb. so many guys buy pickups and then throw a cap on 'em......good if you haul bait/seafood, but otherwise pointless. a burb has an 8 foot bed behind the front row plus a roof rack and it can also haul people. why take 2 cars when you can get everyone there with one vehicle....parking certainly is easier (and cheaper in cities!). and with a hitch on the back, you can use a trailer and haul those few items that are too big to fit in the back.

A burb only has an 8 ft bed if you take the back seats out and then its not a nice flat floor all the way to the back of the front seats. I prefer having a canopy on my truck because when I toss stuff back there, I like to keep it dry. There is more room from floor to ceiling in a truck with a canopy too. You can pop the canopy off and waalaaa...way more room for hauling stuff than a burb. But you are correct about hauling friends and family around...a burb is the champ.

Re: suburbans are cooler than station wagons!

I get offened when people call the old burbs SUVs. I like saying its a truck wagon. I've always thought wagons were cool, so one built like a truck is way cool. Ultimate long trip mobile for 4 or 5 people!

Re: suburbans are cooler than station wagons!

Wagons,'Burb's,Panels, sedan deliveries,Hearses, flower cars, are all cool.Therew's just something about a unique ride with room for a party....
And just to be clear on this My 59 Caddy Hearse proved to me that "The last ride is the smoothest".
I've had at various times,a 66 Vista Cruiser,a 67 Panel,69 Panel,59 Caddy Hearse,and a 68 Panel.The Biggies that got away were a 48 Hudson Hearse,a 66 Caddy Hearse,a 70 Vista Cruiser,a 70 Panel,a 49 Panel and a 49ish Canopy Express.All rides I would have liked to own but either couldn't afford or was too late to buy.
