Anybody patch sheetmetal without prefabbed patch panels

.. So i being totaly cheap and I know it can be done.. Im gonna try to repair my lower fender cub. but i refuse to pay $60 for that lil piece.. anybody have any stories about patchin up panels with your own patches?

Don't cut off your nose to spite your face.

Sixty bucks may seem like a lot, but keep in mind it is made to fit that spot (how well it fits is another subject ;-) ). You can patch it up with metal, but you're probably going to spend a lot more time, do a lot more welding, use a lot more filler and probably not have as nice a job when you're done.

try to find originals that arnt in so good of shape, if the cups are good cut them off. original patches. iv got about 4 ok fenders, i think most have good cups?

I agree with kcsa75, you have to figure in the time involved. Your time is worth something. You'll probably have more than $60 invested all said and done. That would be a tricky part to make too.

I just replaced a fender cup a couple of weeks ago. With the price of the patch, and the labor involved, the cheapest route is to buy a new fender. Even if your time is worth nothing, given the shape of the cup, you will wish you bought something before you are finished.

I replaced a rear tail light section on my bedside. $6 for the patch bout 8 hours of labor to get it right. the reason i m building my truck is to learn and to grow. im not llokingto make cash. in the end i can say " i did that" any person can buy a patch and put it on.. lol with rivets even.. (crazy)

Hand made some rocker panals for my chev venture. Body shop wanted $2300.00 for the repair I had about $100.00 with paint.

My son uses flat pieces of hoods and such for patch panels where they will fit. He made floor pieces for his son's '73 Malabu out of them.

He wanted to learn how to weld and do body work so it was good experience for him. Certain patch panels are better bought though due to the contour.

He replaced the whole floor pan for his wife's '69 one piece at a time from different donor trucks. That was before he found out that the whole floor pan was available. It turned out great, but was very labor intensive.

i just finished doing both fender cups on my fenders. instead of cutting and trying to guess the shape, get a patch to fit a little big and beat it to place and heat it if need be. It took time but was worth it too me to get the experience of that difficult curve.

sweet. I sit out all the rust on my pasenger fender cup and fabbed up some pieces fron the old inner fender.. alot of shaping and about three diferent pieces but i saved about 40 bucks.. lol

I did a cab corner patch with a piece from an old front fender. I cut the old piece out a bit larger, then layed it over the fender and found the best match, and cut it out . A bit of hammer work, and it fit like a glove!
