Maybe Factory Orange ?

Hey Guys, I need your opinion if you think my Jimmy could be factory Orange.

I bought it 2 years ago with the paint as is. No spid to go off of and the only info I have is that the PO used it as a hunting vehicle and that it was a Virginia State Water Control Board vehicle for a good while.

I was up under it today and noticed a small orange patch beneath the grease right under the rear seat area and decided to take a better look. This is what I ended up with. No real shine left to it, but orange as can be!

So, did it start out life Orange and get painted blue when the state got it? The weird thing is that the interior as also a light blue. Dash, door panels, seats, etc. Would they have had a color combo or orange/blue you could choose?

Let me know what you all think, any info is much appreciated!

Thanks, Scott

Re: Maybe Factory Orange ?

I'm thinking factory primer, over which the undercoating was applied(?) Does not look like a factory orange to me.
But who knows, pics posted often don't really show what the color looks like in person.

Re: Maybe Factory Orange ?

Jocko might be right. GM used red oxide primer in the mid 70's. I have that under my 76 Camaro.

Check the engine side of the firewall. Most state governments won't fully disassemble a vehicle just to paint it.

In the picture, the rear bed area looks to be a slightly different color then the door and front fender. Plus different levels of patina. Maybe the bed was a replacement due to damage and repainted to match.

Re: Maybe Factory Orange ?

My 77 Suburban was painted the same color underneath as the top . Not great but it wasn’t primer . Unless they used metallic primer this truck was 100% original never touched

Re: Maybe Factory Orange ?

Looks like Grecian Bronze to me. I had a 76 K10 short bed scottsdale that color. I do seem some factory primer as well though.

Re: Maybe Factory Orange ?

Here is a pic of a color chip for GM trucks in 1980. I think it looks an awful lot like what’s under my Jimmy. But again, I looked it over before going to work today and don’t see ANY overspray on weatherstripping, door handles, wheel wells, etc. but, there is paint faded and blue combing off and underneath that looks to be orange. I do see some maroon color in places that looks like a primer color under the blue and more orange places coming through in other areas. So not really sure what to think at this point.
