I killed Bambi....

I had the worst night of my life last night on my way back home after dropping my girlfriend off. I was coming down an off-ramp from baseline road onto highway 216, when outta nowhere a deer came right infront me out of the ditch!! The front drivers side of the '69 Chevy is damaged because of it. I'm ok, considering the truck flipped the deer right into the drivers side of the windshield, it almost came through it too!! The windshield shattered and broken glass went all over me and the inside of the cab. The drivers side of the hood is smashed in and the passengers side is bent upwards, there's a dent in the top drivers side of the front grill, the front drivers side fender is dented in a few places, the drivers side mirror is broken, the flamed rear view mirror broke, the drivers side of the windshield is shattered and fell partially out into the cab, the roof is scratched up and has blood/guts all over it, and there is a scrape along the middle of the drivers side door. The hood is bent shut so I couldn't open it up to see if there was any damage under the hood.

Got it towed to a storage yard in town near 3 collision repair shops. I spoke with my insurance agent this morning and explained everything. They faxed it all over to my insurance company and I should hear back from them within the next day or two. They're gonna have an appraiser take a look at it and access the damage. Then we'll go from there.

Re: I killed Bambi....

You're extremely lucky, man. My uncle suffered permanent brain/nerve damage from a deer going through the windshielf of his delivery truck...

Vehicles can be repaired a lot easier than we can. Hope you get your wheels back soon.

It's probably a good thing that you had already dropped your girlfriend off. Sorry about the misfortune and I hope your insurance company comes through for you...

Re: I killed Bambi....

The important thing is you're okay.
The truck is wrinkled, but repairable.
Those are all that matter; especially, the "you're okay" part.

Re: I killed Bambi....

Sorry about your truck. Glad your ok. I have hit two deers and one deer hit me. Two vehicles I really didnt gave to much about...75 Toyota Corrolla and a 78 Dodge van...The deer that ran into me...my 76 Olds 442. That really ticked me of! Ran right into my left door...broke my mirror, Window, and took my door handle right off! Dented up the original door that still had the 442 stripping on it.

Did that happen right on the overpass? I noticed some marks on the highway and was wondering what was hit.

Hitting the deer was the best thing you could have done. Had you swerved and hit a telephone pole or something, the accident would have been your fault.

I hit a deer, or more correctly a deer hit me about 30 miles south of Sherwood Park. When I looked at changing insurance companies I was asked about it and they explained it as either being in a colision with a live deer as compared to running into a dead carcass laying on the road. THe live deer was ok.....

I live on the "REZ" the largest Native American Reservation in the country, and it is all "OPEN RANGE" meaning no fences, deer, elk, coyotes are some, but horses, cows, sheep (small, but hit one and it'll get under the vehicle and usually make it roll!!) I was running the speed limit up on what is called the Summit, a pass that climbs to over 8,000 ft in elevation, so lots of wildlife and domesticated livestock. I saw something and pulled to the right a little to "avoid it" and ended up rolling my "new" at the time 05 Yukon XL ($45,000) vehicle, totalled and because I didn't hit "IT" I was charged with causing the accident (INS rates have gone through the roof!) So from now on I am to just floor it and hope for the best (J/K) but I did ask the idiot at the ins agency and he didn't seem to "GET IT!"

Re: I killed Bambi....

Got a few pictures today, I'll try and post them up within the next day or two.

Spoke with my insurance company, they sent an appraiser out this morning to take a look at the damages. He said it's repairable and that it shouldn't be a write-off. Just waiting for the go-ahead from my insurance compnay to take it to a body shop to get fixed. By the sound of it, they're gonna cover the costs to repair the '69. In my opinion, it's gonna cost about $5000 in parts/labour. All I gotta pay is a $250 deductible.

Re: I killed Bambi....

You need to come on down here to Tx. where the deer are smaller. They don't do nearly as much damage, most of the time. I hit two in 7 days while driving in the Hill Country to go....Deer Hunting! Both times. I was driving a company truck, '90 F-150, and neither one did a dime's worth of damage. I was very lucky.

Just about everyone in deer country down here runs "ranch hand" bumper replacements on their newer trucks. The saying is, "once it's inevitable, CENTER UP!" So as not to damage the sides of the truck. I know one rancher that hit seven in one round trip from San Angelo to Abilene (80-85 miles one way) in the same night. My bro-in-law put a bumper replacement on his F-350, and two months later had one run into the side of his truck. It ripped the dually fender right off his truck. Irony at it's best right there.

It's good that you're OK though, and really good your pregnant GF wasn't in the truck. Sounds like the ins company is going to work with you too. Another good thing. Sux for the deer though, huh? Ah well, there's plenty of them.

Re: I killed Bambi....

I completely agree with taking the hit over any other options. vehicles are repairable (most of the time). last fall some "stoners" from my school were driving on a highway that has a solid 50-60 ft shear drop into a ravine on either side. they swerved off the road and landed in the bottom of one. 6 people in a saturn, mind you. none of them were hurt, and i don't know what happened with insurance, but honestly, i sure as hell am not willing to risk that kind of guilt to avoid an accident, only to set myself up for another...
