SM465 4 speed manual- removing speedo gear drive

My 1976 C20 has stripped the speedo drive gear in the gear box. I cannot work out what spanner size is needed to get the 'body' of the drive gear off the gear box. It is something like 1 1/8 inch or 28mm AF, but the engagement edge of the nut is about 3mm.
It may actually be called, 'speedometer drive adaptor nut"
Has anybody had experience with this please?
Thanks in advance.
