Wiper switch?

Delima time...
I need a electromagician...
I got a new universal wiper switch..
When I was testing the old switch for ohms, it was bouncing all over..
The new switch came in but I wasnt getting the same readings...
So I hooked up both switchs to 12v and below are the readings..
Before I hook this up my question is will the new switch work?
I dont want to let the smoke out of my wiper motor if I can help it..
So heres pics of both switches and the results...
Pos-off....1st click....2nd click

I don't know a thing about universal wiper switches of any brand.. But I can tell you this... The wiper motors on our old trucks don't depend on the switch to supply power to the motor.. Power (12 volts) isn't fed to the wiper switch. It's applied to the motor when the ignition switch is turned on.. The wiper switch is grounded to the dash, and provides a ground path to the wiper motor's hi and/or lo speed windings according to the speed selected..

Why are you trying to make a universal switch work on your truck?? Original type switches are readily available..

Re: Wiper switch?

RP..sorry....I should have added this..
The yellow wire on the old switch comes directly from the key switch...its supplied with 12v when the key is in the on position and the switch that then sends volts to the wiper motor...

PS ..this isnt a GM ...its a IH...so theres no off the shelf parts for it.....
I cant verify whether the wiper motor is bad or not...it worked ...sorta... before I tore it apart... the wipers were struggling to make a swipe and return...so I could have a bad motor as well...

Re: Wiper switch?

On both old and new universal switch, did you connect the 12V to B? And is that middle terminal on the old switch you show the white wire connected to the B terminal? I can't figure out by the manual page or by your test of the old switch what the difference is between P and B. It seems they are connected together and then why have 2 terminals?

I noticed on the old switch the low speed has both terminals connected to power in one speed, and one terminal connected for the other speed. This is fairly Chevy-like, except with a Chevy you are switching the wires to ground instead of switching the supply power as on the IH. Interesting. You new universal switch doesn't appear to allow you to connect both motor terminals to 12 V for one of the speeds, so I'm thinking it is not compatible.

If I were facing this problem I would probably go ahead and use the new universal switch or a Chevy switch, but add a relay or relays or power MOSFET transistors in order to make the behavior of the output of the relays match what the IH original switch does.

Does your IH switch also control a washer pump?

Re: Wiper switch?

thanks RP...im on a IH site also, but theres not much info out there...it seems this is some oddball setup or somethingorother...
just trying to get something to work...
may have to rely on rain-x

dmj.. yes I had 12v connected to B...on the orig switch the B wire connects to the key switch and that's where the 12v supply to the wiper motor comes from

from my searching B-battery 12v.....P-park mode..which makes the wipers go to the home/down position...but I cant find anywhere what the F and A switch functions are supposed to do
the new switch may not work as is...I was just assuming that these would swap..it didn't cost much so its not much lost if it wont..
IH doesn't have a washer pump..
I cant find a electrical breakdown of the wiper circuit other than what the manual shows..

Re: Wiper switch?

1st off let me thank all that helped with the wiper switch, thru replys and pms..
I did as suggested and tried one wire at a time with the old switch..
Glory be...everything worked just as it should...
The park position worked.
Hi speed works..
Lo speed works...but only if A and F are both connected..
So I hooked up all 3 wires and ran the switch thru all the positions...everything worked..
Better than it did before teardown..
Maybe the cleaning I've given everything did some good..
So I'll be using the old orig switch afterall..
On a side note , the new switch only had off and high speed...no lo or park...so it wont work..
Heres the diagram with the switch position and what they do...and I verified the voltage readings while it was running....still not sure how the lo spd works with A and F both having 12v..but it works.

Re: Wiper switch?

Now that I know everything is in working order, I decided to take apart and clean the drive gears and contacts...everything looks good on the inside, but was nasty,,

and there was 2 big globs of a greasy like substance sitting on top of the brass contact plate along with some grit and dirt...I sprayed it all down with electric contact cleaner....I'm pretty sure the grease is some type of dielectric grease...but it looks like axle grease...it is over 60yrs old after all....do I need to put more dielectric on the plate before I put it back together?...

I put a touch of lithium grease on the shaft where it passes thru the housing...the worm gear is metal and the worm wheel is plastic so I assume it doesnt need any lube on it...I did clean all the dirt and grease out of the teeth...
So do I need grease?
Pics of the Inside...red circles are where the balls of grease were..
Pics of the grease also..
