292 questions

anyone know what a 292 would get for milage in a 70 k10 with a 4 speed 3:73s and 33s? how does a 292 compare to a 350? would a header with or without 4 barrel intake give better gasmilage? or would the 1 barrel with stock manifold be be better?

Milage will be about the same as a 350 when properly set up. I would go with a 350 and a good quadrajet carb, they are about the best for milage. The 292 is a good engine, but is compromised on airflow through the head. And parts aren't cheap, due to limited production. But they are a cool engine to have in a truck.

It probably won't get-up and boogie like a 350, unless you spent a lot of money. A four barrel, intake, cam and headers would wake it up a bit. It'd act more like a tractor engine then a car engine. Kinda like V6 GMC's.

i've always heard the oldtimers swear they got the best fuel mileage from the 250 six. the 292 got crap for mpg, but it's more of a workhorse. unfortunately, however, no matter what these trucks don't get "good" gas mileage.

A 250 will definitely get better mileage than a 292. 292's are well known as gas hogs.

With your gearing and tires, I wouldn't be suprised if you got 8 mpg or so.

I've played with mine a lot, converting to HEI, and installing 3.08 gearing, and I can get 14 mpg most days. This is a 2wd truck with 28 inch tall tires though.

I have a 67 K10 short bed with a 292,4 barrel ,headers and HEI. It has 33" tires and 373 rears and it gets about 12 MPG .About the same as when it was stock when it had the 1bbl and manifold. Chris

I know on the farm we had trucks with both, and overall I imagine the 292(and especially the 250) got better mpg than the SBC............Main reason was the SBC had to be wound up to pull anything more than the pickup itself. The Inliner with its torque curve right where you wanted it would loaf along. We ALWAYS took the inline powered truck to pull hay wagons from field to farm FIRST for this reason. But running light on the highway the SBC did get better mpg.

I got a 250 I am going to drop into my k-20 and I am going to try a Clifford Intake, Cast Iron Header's from Tom L. and I am still debating whether to put a different Cam in it................IMO, I'd rather have the Inliner, they are different, sound different, and running through a straight pipe sound alot meaner than any V-8............
