Re: 1956 gmc 100

Well...the box is on for the last time and bolted down. Some may think its backwards to do things like this but its the only way i can stay motivated, if i dont see cool progress i lose interest fast. Next on to the doors, they are lined up fairly well but are coming off so i can install the one piece glass and strip them down to refinish. I should have an update in a month or so....lol

The two tone color scheme will be excellent for leaving the scene of a crime.

"It was a red truck."

"No, it was a blue truck!"

Re: 1956 gmc 100

I got the doors off and stripped the wings, glass and paint. The skins are good other than dings and dents. the bottom insides are rusted in the usual place, i think im going to buy door bottoms and replace them but im undecided on which way to go. Once again i must point out the obvious... Whoever did this truck last was a bondo MASTER! lol.I have the new one piece glass cut and the extra track so i can go ahead with the Blackdiesel method. Im still motivated at this point but every time i look at my coupe i want to switch projects.

Re: 1956 gmc 100

I finally got around to rebuilding the door hinges. I bought a new pin kit...but of course once i got in there they had drilled them out and replaced the pins with bolts. I went to the next size bigger hardened bolt cut off the threads and redrilled the hinges, added spacers and pianted them. More work than i had planned but not hard and fairly easy.

Re: 1956 gmc 100

I finished painting the front clip, cleaned up the emblems and installed them. About all i have left is to repair the door= Bottoms, lotsa dents and one piece glass.

Robo,
That door looks great. Did you wend up doing ANYTHING to the inside or outside of the doors where they're rusted?

Mine have the usual crust inside on the very bottom. I've thought about using my el cheapo sand blaster in there and after blowing them clean using a POR-15 or KBS type product in there. What do you think of that approach?

I've only got rust-through in a small area on one door so I've wondered if I could just cut out/replace that area or if I should cut the entire bottom few inches off, then do as I wrote above?

Re: 1956 gmc 100

no, i think the por15 is a good idea but i would replace any rust areas with new metal. I bought new inner door bottoms and will have to install them when i do the doors.

Re: 1956 gmc 100

Getting close now! to bad it'll be snowing in a few weeks lol. I have to finish the doors and some odds and ends and thats it. I am going to lower the front an inch or so.. i want a little more rake and my opinion is that theres to much tire showing. I cleaned and painted the GMC emblems but now i dont like the red...i'm thinking of painting them the same graphite color as the wheels? what do you guys think?

X2 on painting in emblems with the wheel colour. Great job so far, looks good. I'm a bit jealous though, I remember you started your project way after mine.

Re: 1956 gmc 100

I tried the graphite color on the emblems and i think it made them look old. I tried white and i like the contrast so thats what i'm going with.
