Gasoline to Deisel price ratio?

Does anyone have a theory on this?
Back when gas started coming down from the peak, the Deisel price really didn't move much. At one point, the difference between them was over $2.
Now it's less than $.50 Gas is somewhere around $3.59 a gallon and Deisel is hovering around $4-$4.05?

Also, what's with the price difference between the octane ratings. Back in the day, 10-15 cents a gallon was normal, now it can be as much as $.50?

Re: Gasoline to Deisel price ratio?

Diesel should be way less money than Gasoline, like it used to be, Cheaper.

It takes less refining than Gas

It should not be more $

Re: Gasoline to Deisel price ratio?

This winter it topped $6.00 up here in Down East Maine. It cost me around $175.00 to fill up my 2500 3/4 ton. I used to have house payments less than that. I made less than that as an E-1 even with jump pay. I really don't know how those with heating oil for a primary heat source made it this year.

My theory? COVID gave everyone a license to steal unabated. That is not a political statement it is a reality.

You are right. But you forget that greed costs more than refining.

I don't see that as a political statement. The price of absolutely everything has gone way up. No denying it. COVID could be the reason. Maybe, maybe not? I don't know what started it. All I know is that we are all getting hosed at the pump and at the grocery store and the list goes on.

"Getting hosed at the pump'. I made a funny without even knowing it.

Re: Gasoline to Deisel price ratio?

Some time ago, Congress started allowing the widespread exporting of US oil products. If diesel is enough higher in the EU to cover the cost of shipping, that is where it goes. When Russia decided to invade Ukraine and the EU lost that low cost Russian diesel, a lot of ours went there. Less diesel here, price goes up.

Way back in another galaxy far, far away...I bought brand new in the box Ford f-250 6.0 Power Stroke 4-wheel drive Diesel truck. D-Fuel was close to a dollar less than gas. Less than 90 days later the price started flipping. My good timing.

Re: Gasoline to Deisel price ratio?

Diesel is far more popular then it used to be expressed as a ratio between itself, and gas. How many 3/4, and 1 ton trucks do people use as DD. It's harder to find nicer spec trucks in gas vs diesel. Sometimes it looks like 75% of the HD's on autotrader are diesel for consumer use. As in not commercial spec trucks.

Amazon, and other delivery vehicles. Which are spreading like wildfire. Use a good percentage of diesel.

Combined with air travel being more popular, and a few other things diesel competes with in the refining process.

It's going to be more expensive for quite awhile. If not near permanently.

The refining process can only move around the margins how much of each item it gets, and it depends heavily on type of crude you get as a base material.

Re: Gasoline to Deisel price ratio?

I find, at least around here, that diesel price tracks along with gasoline (ie, gas goes up, diesel goes up, and vice versa) but there is a lag of a few days or a week.

I also find that diesel price varies depending on location, even within my small community. I can find secret spots were it is a $1 or more cheaper that other more prominent locations just by keeping my eyes peeled.
