T400 with NP205 questions?

Who can verify the lengths of a few setups for me. I would like distance from front of bell housing to center of yoke on rear output shaft of transfercase on a T400 and NP205 setup? Is there a difference in length depending on which model adapter is used? (there is the newer round adapter and figure 8 older version).

Also need the same on

a T350 and NP205 setup (version I will switch away from)?

and 700R4 with T350 adapter and NP205 transfercase?

I hope to pick one and keep the stock mounting location on transfercase cross member which allows me to keep my drivelines too and this will hopefully move motor new BB 2-2.5" forward in engine compartment.

I want to lay it all out before I buy a used setup to rebuild or order a Bowtie Overdrive 700R4 and find out lots of stuff moves or doesn't fit perfect.

thanks for advise and help.

The t350/205 stock combo is the shortest, IIRC a 700 is 1.625" longer than a t350 from bellhousing to rear.
There are 3 different lengths of t400 output shafts used in 4wd's. Several different 205 inputs,ie 32 spline short and long, 27 spline t350 type, and a coarse spline used on 4spds, most of which are not interchangable. Lot's of good info on the ORD site.

Moving the engine forward is a good way to do the swap. Just watch oil pan clearance to front axle, shouldnt be a problem with a small lift.

length might help

I think added length from T400 and 205 might help with moving engine forward to clear firewall. As far as I have read on offraod design page (and their pics) and others the input shaft on 205 that came behind T400 was the short female 32 spine version. I was hope to figure out if teh round and figure 8 adapter was same length. Also would like to know the length of the adpater kit AA sells to use 2 wheel drive T400 and my stock tranfercase with the 27 spline male input shaft.

The ORD website says they sell a conversion kit to modify my 205 to take the T400 adapter for $200. There is also some machine work to do to the 205 case. Then I need the T400 adapter and a good T400 to rebuild.

What are the different T400 trannys I will find?

Unfortunately I don't have my truck right now to give you measurements because it's getting painted, but wanted to say that I'm running a th400 and np205 with a big block in my 4x4. Basically what I did is connect all three together and dropped the transfer case in the original holes; this gave me plenty of firewall clearance with the BB, with no other mods like body lift. All I had to do was move the motor mounts forward and drill new holes. ORD is who I used for the th400/np205 conversion. Hope this helps a little?

nice pics

A few questions.

Did you test fit your brake booster and alternator brackets?

Was ORD the suppler on trans or just conversion parts?

Did you use a TH350 transfercase to start with?

I assume that is a TH400 adapter, is it the newer round verison or older figure 8 version?

Do you remember how far the engine moved forward?

Very nice setup and great help.

thank you.

Hey cheyenne10,

Did you test fit your brake booster and alternator brackets?
Yes the fit was fine, I'm running a 90's model hydraboost, and the alternator fits just fine also.

Was ORD the suppler on trans or just conversion parts?
Just the conversion parts.

Did you use a TH350 transfercase to start with?
No I bought the transfer case from ORD.

I assume that is a TH400 adapter, is it the newer round verison or older figure 8 version?
Older figure eight.

Do you remember how far the engine moved forward?
I believe about 2 1/2 inches.

Thank you.

205 rear output shaft

IS that the fixed yoke style rear 205 output shaft?

Can you share what T-case cost from ORD?

I got the fans with the Be Cool radiator. I also put in a brand new wiring harness, so yes it wasn't to bad to wire because it was pre-wired.

Fixed Yoke.

cheyenne10, yes it is the fixed yoke style. I don't remeber the total cost, but I can tell you it was expensive. If you give them a call they can tell you what it would cost for what you want to do, they are pretty good fokes.
