It's Justin the owner of the truck. I've been quite busy so you've been dealing more with my father.

Well.....I took about a 5 minute brake on the Vette to start the tailgate re-skin and handle relocation......Just to let Rich know I didn't recycle his gate or anything !

Using the SirMichaels kit:-

I couldn't get the original philips head bolts to budge...even with an impact screwdriver...so I had to weld nuts to them:

Once I remove the outer skin...it will drop in just perfect:

Looking good John!
I've been on vacation this week and had company but they went home last night. Today I took the tires to Barry's and mounted them to get an idea of how this will look. I like it! What do you all think?????

first of... great job on the truck. You are making good choices. I have a question about the welding you are doing. Nothing wrong with it in fact it looks awesome thats why I would like to know what setup you are using? Tig mig arc which and with what gas? I about to start cutting the floor on mine and dont want to mess that up.

Thanks...

I am using a MIG welder, .035 wire, and a Argon/CO2 mix.

Re: PROJECT "Father/Son" C-20 Rolling Chassis Build

I finally had an hour today of free-time....well away from all the other madness to jump back on the tail-gate.
-
-
I picked up some spot-weld drill-bits..they work great, but need to be sharpened after about 50 or so holes.
-
-
Here's some progress:
-
-

-

-

-

-

-

-

-

-
After the long cut was made, I thought I was ready to skin her, but it was also spoted thru the middle !!!
-

-
Got her cracked open !!

Re: PROJECT "Father/Son" C-20 Rolling Chassis Build

The center spots were tuff.....I went thru both side on some spots...no biggie that's what a welder and sander are for !
-
-

-

-

-

-
-
The inside of the gate, and along the seams are a little rusty...not sure if Rich wants to hit that with the media blaster, then primer before I seal it up ??
-
-
More soon !!!

Re: PROJECT "Father/Son" C-20 Rolling Chassis Build

Awesome John!
You are doing great!
I think the best plan is to get that straight. Then I definetly want that blasted and hit with weld thru primer before the skin is attached. I can primer it with my TP tools HVLP system. So work it to make sure sure it it straight and the new skin aligns good. Then give me a call and I'll pick it up to drop off at the media place. Or if you want you can drop it off at Accu Burr on Berger Drive, which is off of Gish. Talk to Steve. Tell him its' for me.
Thanks again. I am sure it will look great when finished. Call me with any questions.
Rich

Re: PROJECT "Father/Son" C-20 Rolling Chassis Build

Wow, I actually came back to this gate today.......This past month has been hectic...from getting hammered at the 'Lost Isle"...to blown power valves and MSD's in jet-boats....organizing pops wherehouse...to adding another year to my age this past Tuesday, I have been really busy..

I know, enough of that...here is some progress !!
-
-
Rich had the inner skin blasted and primed before I skinned the outside. I straightened the inner, lower radius part of the gate before the reassembly. This minimizes the need for excess mud. These are just a few dings from a truck being used as, well, a truck....
-

-

-

-

-

-
Next, I prepped the inside of the new skin by lightly sanding the surface rust that has formed, then priming the edges with the 'weld-thru' primer, then priming the middle with black primer, then with some semi-gloss for further corrosion pertection:
-

-

-
If you look closely and concentrate, you might be able to see the can of 'weld-thru' primer....
-

-

-

There is a talented man I know named "chief"
He works on old trucks for cash and relief
He performed his magic on my tailgate
and wrapped it all up on 8-8-08
Chief, now that is looking great!
