1991 Bodied Cummins dually on 22s

hey guy ive had a build thread going over on Duallyscene.com for a few years on this truck(well actually 2 trucks and a suburban). there isn't alot of traffic over that way so i decided to start a build thread here....as we all know the story is the best part of teh truck builds so ill start where i can..

my Senior year in high school my dad bought me a 2003 GMC sierra to drive when my 1981 longbed f150 decided to give up the ghost(16 year old drivers have a heavy right foot). over the next several years i built it into a sweet show truck when money allowed....this is when i really got into custom trucks and start enjoying car shows....here it is

about 2 months after i painted it green i was rear ended on the way home from a show...in the next few months i made a few bad decision that ended with me trading off the truck....which left me with no truck and a pocket full of cash....this was about the time that TowNasty was all over the scene down this way....i loved the truck and wanted to buy it but it was in Ohio by the time that i come up with any money...so i decided to build my own....started searching the web, craigslist, mautofied, ebay....finally found what looked to be a clean dually about 3 hours south of me in Middleburg, Fl.
Drove down and bought the truck without much inspection. drove it home and seemed to be a good truck.....over th enext few months the plan was simple...i wanted it bodied on semi wheels....so few days after i bought the truck i drove to Myrtle Beach, SC and picked up 6 22s off craigslist...found some adaptors in Florida and had those shipped up...then commenced to start tearing it apart

while it was tore apart to have the frame built i decided to swap in an LS motor

what was suppose to be a few months build turned into a few years build...we had teh truck pretty close to back together when my little girl was born....at that point progress came to an almost complete stand still so i could enjoy the joys of parenthood...the truck sat untouched for about 6 months...i was getting real discouraged with it

after about 6 months i finally built exhaust for it and started doing bodywork on it....thats when i got really dishearted with it....truck was literally a rust bucket and had been bondo'd over real good and made to look solid.....rear door jams were eat through with rust and cab and bed were so thick it was ridiculous.

i got the cab seam shaved and cab corners ground down and re-body worked...the LS motor was carb'd and i decided to go back to fuel injection as i was never real happy with carb setup...pulled the motor out and painted it up real good and swapped back to FI

started bodywork on the bed to find it was covered in Body filler also so i bought a new bed

Re: 1991 Bodied Cummins dually on 22s

...at this point the truck was only getting worked on a few times a month and progress was really slow....when my tuner came over to make my LS motor idle i found a big set back...motor had a 230/237 cam in it and has a rough idle...my tuner was having a hard time getting it to idle...we started checking things only to find number 3 cylinder was down on compression....i had just spent over a grand painting this motor, buying a Current performance harness for it, and the other little odd and end stuff....i was pissed at this point(2 steps forward, 4 steps back)....pulled the truck out in the yard where she sat for another long while....my buddy here in town also has a bagged dually and he was picking on me pretty hard about finishing my truck...one night was over at his pa-in-laws house helping them on a race car when we got to talking about my truck...his pa-in-law asks me what i need to get it rolling and i told him about my motor being shot and he tells me he has just what i need to get it fixed...i was expecting for him to say he had a good motor but instead he tells me to walk across the road and look for a white crew cab....i walk over to find a retired fuel truck they use to run hauling fuel to dump trucks on the job sight....truck was all beat up but there was zero rust anywhere on it...all the bent panels on the truck could be easily replaced so that was no big deal but i wasnt looking for a truck i needed a motor....so i popped the hood to find awesome....93 model 12 valve already installed with a518 trans....this truck had been worked for several years with this combo already installed so i fealt like it was pretty proven

after looking the truck over real good and debating my options i decided i was interested in the truck....3500 bucks later it was mine....now the decision was to either swap the Cummins into my current truck or swap bag parts over to the new truck....i chose to give up the body drop for the Cummins and solid cab...after driving it around for a few weeks to fix the odd and end problems from sitting i tore her apart and swapped some body panels and suspension parts

after driving it around for alittle while and working out the little bugs i put some non-raised fender on the back and gave her a solid coat of primer

Re: 1991 Bodied Cummins dually on 22s

...the whole burgundy interior out of my first dually had been swapped into this dually....one friday me and a buddy hopped into my truck and headed to town to pay a few bills and pick up a few things....i had just gotten my new harwood 4 inch cowl hood few weeks earlier....about 1/2 mile from my house the hood latch released and sent the hood thru my windshield, crack free dash pad and bent my metal dash down about 2 inces....not the first crack in my fiberglass hood.

after alittle thought i decided against just finding another dash pad and decided to go ahead and do a dash swap....went to the junkyard and found a 1962 Impala dash and cut her out...widened it 7 inches and welded her in

she also got ne wcarpet from Stockinteriors.com and bucket seats at this time

cruised it around like these for the last year and half or so till January of this year...even put her to work alittle....hood has yet to get put back on lol

the bed was cut out and hacked up so i spent alittle time sheetmetal'n it

around january of this year i decided it was time to body drop it...been slowly plugging away it it since then

new frame rails

got rid of the 2 link and built a new rear suspension

also went with the Accuair elevel setup

cab back on for first time

tubbed and shaved the firewall

wheels back on...had them Custom cut by Trevor at Tennessee Wheel and Tire

thats where im at right now...been dealing with a nightmare of wiring for where the previous owner did the Cummins swap.....got most of it straightened out and actually crunk it for the first time today....more updates to come in the next few weeks

I'm digging this. That's one awesome project you got there. The dash swap looks great. And a Cummins too

Sweet I had seen some pics of your truck on this site and I must say I love it! I never knew that there was another dually before that helped with the process of this one.. What ever happened to it? Just kinda using it for parts still?

Re: 1991 Bodied Cummins dually on 22s

i wouldnt be comfortable selling it to anybody cause the cab is junk and there isnt much left good of the frame.....i cut out fuel cell mounts, bag mounts, and other things that dont leave it as a complete frame anymore

Re: 1991 Bodied Cummins dually on 22s

Thanks guys.....sorry for the lack of updates.....really been struggling with this thing last few days....I finally got my injection pump back Tuesday.....1300 bucks later.......seems that when my pump let go it decided to take all the internals and smash them around with each other.....always good stuff.....put my new pump on Tuesday night with my dad.....could nt get it to crank, keep bleeding it over and over again.....finally gave up for the night around midnight.....came back last night and started checking little stuff.....finally discovered that.my 12 volt source to the Fuel shutoff solenoid had 12 volts while the key was on but as soon as the key went to crank it went to 0 volts so it wasn't letting the pump push fuel.....simple fix that we just plain overlooked Tuesday night......got that figured out and put my radiator in so I could let if run a minute......freaking radiator now has a nice hole right in the center so guess I'll be pricing a radiator here in a few minutes when parts store opens up...but as discouraged as I am I can see the light at the end of thetunnel
