77 gmc c35 dually 4-53t detroit

New thread for my new project. The truck is a 77 crew cab c35 gmc dually camper special 10,000 gvw. It has a 79 brazillian 4-53t detroit diesel 4 valve swapped in. It has a NP 540 main transmission and a 5831 3 spd spicer aux trans. It also has a dana 70hd rear end, hydraboost brakes also. I will post pics of what is done so far. It was propane injected but the tank was braking the bed (120 gal tank) I have since removed the injection. For those of you that have seen my other build this is total different nothing is painted or show quality. This is a factory conversion back in 87 and I'm keeping the same wear it has on it. That said it will not be thrown together just weathered.

Re: 77 gmc c35 dually 4-53t detroit

Sounds like a cool project. Someday I want to put an inline 6-71 in something. A long while ago, I put an 8v-92 with a 10 speed in a military truck chassis, and stuck an 86 K30 crew cab drw body on it. That was a big mean truck.

Wow this is a really well optioned truck too! Looking forward to more on this! I worked on a 6V73 today. Brought me back to the old days. I'd love to run across an old 4-53. I'd love it more if it was a turbo like this one too!

Re: 77 gmc c35 dually 4-53t detroit

You are correct lots of options. It has functioning AC and had cruise control but I removed it. It had the Bendix vacuum pump I removed it also I will use an electric one for the hvac controls. It had the biggest muffler on it and a noise reduction air cleaner also. I have replumbed the fuel system the right way. I removed all the fuel tanks except the drivers tank. I modified a bbc fan shroud to shield the fan and am putting in a bbc radiator. It had a small rad rigged in with c channel. I raised the aux trans as far up as it can go it was 3 inches from the ground when I got it. Later I will make a new rear cross member for it but for now I just used square tubing. Right now I am fixing all the cut up wiring and removing what does not need to be there. I think so far I have shed about 1800 lbs off it. The propane injection tank was 80% full and 125 gal that alone is a lot of weight. I will get some more pics tomorrow.

O yea this is about the best Detroit I have seen so far and I have been around them a long time. It doesn't leak, starts right up, and has the highest oil pressure I have ever seen one have.

It hangs a little low it was worse it was just 3in from the ground. I have it as high as it will go. I will make a new rear cross member later. It is even with the oil pan so should be ok. Not going to be rock crawling.

Curious to know what kind of mileage you're getting out of 212 cubic inches of 2 stroke diesel. I know the DD's weren't really known for being fuel friendly.

Lots of looks when its up high in the rpm. I was getting about 17 mpg but I found a fuel leak so that's fixed. I drive 30 miles a day I filled up on sun and I still have a full tank. Its a 15 gal tank I am guessing 20's. The rpms are at 1900 at 65.

I love that aux box. They always are down low. When you moved it up it didn't mess the driveline angle up to much did it? Not a lot of guys even know what they are anymore. I have a 6x4 in my Dodge 5500. People always look at it weird with the 2 levers sticking up. Anymore most people get lost seeing 3 pedals.
